If Im at the Atlantic Ocean, can I get shots of the Milky Way on a clear night? Which direction in the sky do I point the camera to?

Yes you can. Looking in the southern sky this time of year. I tried to attach an image but the file it too large. I'll have to resize it.

Here is one resized. Note the low cloud cover on the distant horizon...it amplifies the light coming from that town 50 miles away.

You're welcome. I'll be going out again tonight.

If you have a tablet or smart phone there is a $2.99 app called Stellarium. It REALLY takes the mystery out of the night sky.

Good luck finding dark spots...Its tough in NJ. :)

Here's a shot I took near Limon, CO, in July. I was looking to the southeast at a windmill turbine farm northeast of town. The alignment of the Milky Way was southwest to northeast. In the last couple of nights I've been out looking at the sky for meteors from the Perseid Meteor Shower and it almost appeared to me the Milky Way has shifted to an east - west alignment...

This is fantastic, it is possible to get a shot when the moon is not a "new moon"?
