The Trouble with EBay Feedback.

I have used EBay for years and purchased hundreds of items - usually very satisfactory - but the do have some rather strange policies.
Probably - like most others - I check a sellers feedback in order to avoid nasty surprises. However I am now questioning the validity of the feedback.

On a recent purchase of a pack of DVD sleeves the seller sent the wrong item which was of no use to me. I contacted the seller but they did not have the decency to reply.
Here, the EBay system worked well and I received a full refund.
Naturally - after an incident such as this - I left bad feedback for the seller reflecting the bad service I had had.
Imagine my surprise when EBay sent me a message saying 'We received the Feedback you left for the transaction, but it's been removed from the seller's Feedback Profile because of a recent decision on the case.'
This apparently means that really crap sellers are protected from bad feedback!

Yeah, they like to protect their sellers, yet I have seen lots of bad feedback. I don't know how that works.

Maybe since ebay made good on it, they didn't want to post a negative comment. Maybe they look at the final result. Fortunately, I've had good luck with ebay, both buying and selling.

I concur, that is my take on the situation - no bad feedback if EBay has sorted it. Perhaps they have their own system for sellers who err.

Other than not understanding their system I also have generally had a very good buying and selling experience with EBay. With the number of local shops closing down EBay and Amazon are the main people to turn to now - even for food.

A mistake is a mistake and it was rectified. That is not cause for negative feedback.

It may have been more productive, although it does not affect percentage points, to post the feedback as neutral and list that the seller sent the wrong item. I think the post above me is correct in that your feedback was rejected because the problem was taken care of.

Sellers got whacked bad a few years ago for feedback retaliation. Many large sellers were holding their feedback until they saw buyer feedback and then posting their own. Often negative.

eBay dropped the hammer on them and there were a couple of years when sellers could not even post feedback. Also the "hold on funds" for new buyers came into effect at that time.

I only mention this as the fact that eBay seems to me to be (after 20 years of using them) quite fair on feedback. To the point, I never buy anything on eBay from a seller who can't maintain a 99.7% feedback on feedbacks over at least 200.

What was the feedback percentage on your "seller" in this case?

No response needed.

99.3% - I am usually more observant than that, still a good reminder to pay more attention in future. 8-)

Yes, and no. Yes, the seller was crap. No, you were refunded your money. So, all is well in ebayville, from their point of view.

Except that the seller did not respond to email and did not correct the problem themselves - it took EBay to correct their 'mistake'.

If I see any seller with feedback to say the wrong item had been sent and the seller would not respond - then I would want to avoid purchasing anything from that seller!

In that case I agree that negative feedback was in order.

I had a similar experience with Amazon. With Ebay, you are expected to give 5 stars. Anything less is taken as an insult. If I get what I've paid for, I don't think it's worth 5 stars. Wopee do they didn't rob me.
