Aspect Ratio on Olympus m4/3

Morning Star Loc: West coast, North of the 49th N.

The camera: OM-D E-M1
Default AR: 4:3. Other available AR's: 16:9, 3:2, 1:1, 3:4.

Quote from the manual: "JPEG images are cropped to the selected aspect ratio; RAW images, however, are not cropped but are instead saved with information on the selected aspect ratio. When RAW images are played back, the selected aspect ratio is shown by a frame."

Just a note to those of us here on the Hog, who have the E-M1. And I wouldn't wonder but this would work for the E-M5, or E-M10 or... as well.

So the camera captures the 4:3 raw file. However, if you are using (like I am) PSE, the raw file you get to see is cropped the same as whatever AR ratio you use. I'd think that PS and Lr do the same thing. I don't know what other editing programs do.

I do not have the Olympus Viewer (OV3), which should work as the manual says. However, I do have FastStone Image Viewer, and with it I can see the entire 4:3 image in raw, while the jpg shows the 1:1 I had the camera set to. So it appears that all the information of the image can be recovered with that program.

I don't know what other brands and models of cameras do in recording raw files when different ARs are selected, but it may be worth looking into.

The advantage is of course, if you know ahead of time you are going to print at a certain AR, you can set the camera and compose for that, but still have the raw file to do with whatever you want.
