It's time for the annual cosmic show known as the Perseids meteor shower, and this week is your best chance in the past five years to see the sky rain "shooting stars."

As a new moon approaches on Thursday morning, Aug. 13, observers in the Northern Hemisphere will have the best opportunity to witness the spectacle in full glory without the glare of moonlight. The best viewing time will be Wednesday night going into Thursday, when the meteors begin trickling into view just before midnight. The pace quickly picks up until the early morning hours.

The conditions to view the Perseids have not been this good for the Northern Hemisphere since 2010.

The meteor shower is expected to reach its peak early Thursday morning at 4 a.m. ET | 1 a.m. PT when as many as 100 meteors per hour will be visible in the night sky, according to ABC News. For best viewing, look toward the northeastern part of the sky, near the constellations Cassiopeia and Perseus.

A shot from last year:

IF YOU DO GET SOME SHOTS PLEASE POST THEN HERE!!

Thanks, I'm going to have to find a place without too much light pollution to try to get some photos. Living in the city makes that a challenge.

You're right the city lights can be a hinderance... the good thing is the moon this year will not conflict with the night sky.

Got my gear ready, batteries charged, gas in the truck, jacket in the ready, red flashlight packed, dark place picked out. Now I just need to figure out how to keep the brain clear and sharp over the day/night/day that this will entail. Sigh, I really need to retire so opportunities like this can be enjoyed fully.

Timelapse, not for the weak of will.

I took care of Ted for 5/6 years in our house. He lived to 91 yrs old. I felt so bad for him because he was brought up in the depression and money was only to be saved. Every day a half a sandwich for lunch with a half of an apple and a cup of tea and 2 cookies. Breakfast was 1/3 cup of cherrios with 1/2 banana and a cup of instant coffee. His delight of the day was having ice cream around 8pm before bed. Sat in dark living room we set up for him and never turned on light in bedroom or his personal bathroom, he used a flashlight if he needed to get up.

Supper, he ate half of what he got when we went out for supper and took him, and saved the other half for next day. He was a great person but so tight he creaked. I didn't know how much he was worth until, as executor of his estate, I started opening envelopes and finding accounts in CT, NH and CA. Investments, cash, bonds, CDs. You name it. Almost 1 million dollars going to me and my younger brother. I feel so sorry he had no thought to enjoy his money.

Uncle Ted - Love and Miss you.
