I will eventually receive my p900 and wanted an opinion on which camera to take on a week long cruise to the Caribbean. I have already ruled my D7100 due to weight.

I was wondering whether to carry my sony a6000 with 18-55 lens or the p900. I need your viewpoint(s).

Thanks

I have the a6000 and really like it. Think about adding the Sigma 19mm prime for 200.00. Really isn't a problem taking 2 cameras on a cruise since there is not a lot of walking on the boat. The 900 may be the best for shore tours.

Just my opinion, but I think that having only 18-55 range on a vacation trip will leave you wishing many times on that trip that you had more. The A6000 is a really fine camera, but my thought is that you will return from your trip being very happy that you took the P900.

Uh, the photo ops when taking a cruise generally occur during the time in port. Unless you are on a transatlantic cruise, you will be doing a lot of walking and will want a camera in your hand.

I take a lot of cruises, and have used both my Sony Nex-7 (for-runner to A6000) and Sony RX-10. The APS-C size sensor on the A6000 will give you more detail on all shots than the P900, even though you can zoom with the lens. Also your A6000 is far better in low light situations, and video. I enjoy doing video's of the entertainment on board, and take a 16-50 power zoom to do so. On shore I use the 18-105mm "G" glass lens which has all the zoom I need. I have also used Tamron's 18-200mm lens, but find that the slightest bad weather produces problems with that lens. The small size of the A6000 makes it much more enjoyable to carry everywhere. I do suggest that you invest in a longer zoom lens than the 18-55 for the A6000. The quality is worth it!

Do you like to shoot RAW? The P900 doesn't do RAW but has extreme magnification. I would probably take both. Shoot RAW with the A6000 and take advantage of the detail such as entering ports, etc. And use the P900 where zoom is needed.

The Nikon D7100 is a half pound lighter than the P900. I am not sure if this with a lens attached. It also gets about 2.5 times as many snaps per battery charge. Enjoy your trip.

All three of your camera choices will work.

The 7100 is only lighter without a lens, but you will be surprised how big the P900 is.

If you don't shoot raw, or lots of low light I would take the P900 because it has the zoom range for anything that you are likely to take.

If you shoot a lot of low light, then either the A6000, or the 7100 with a fast lens are best.

I would probably take all of the above plus an underwater housing for one of them, but if you want to go light then pick your poison. No matter which you choose if you only go with one lens you are limiting your options.

I like to shoot entering and leaving port. A long lens is good for that. I also like to shoot wildlife, once again a long lens. However, shots of people and scenery will benefit from a wider lens such as the 18-55 or even wider.

Shots of shows on the cruise ship may need a 70-200 depending on where you are sitting. There is no one perfect lens or camera for what you are doing.

My wife carries one of the earlier Nikon super zooms and my mom, who is 81 now, carries the P900 while I carry everything but the kitchen sink.

Enjoy your trip. Cruising can be a wonderful time. Especially if you have good ports of call and choose interesting excursions.

Nikon superzoom for daytime shots, A6000 with larger sensor for evening. Superzoo resolution is fine unless you're pritning large. I would suggest a quick-setup monopod as well.

Wondering how large a quality print you can get from either the P900 or A6000. I try to enter exhibits that require at least 11x17.

The A6000 has a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor. You can blow up you images from it as much as you can the ones from the D7100. ;)

Thanks. Do you know what the max enlargement size is for the new Nikon Coolpix P900?

It has a very small sensor. 1/2.3 inch if I remember correctly. Your desired 11 x 17 is not a good match.

The A6000 has an APS-C sensors and can be enlarged better. And the p900 is JPEG only, so not as much processing option either.
