I burned a DVD yesterday to do a manual install. This morning, I received MS notification that my download was ready, so I decided to let it download and install. The download was completed in about 10 minutes. I then proceeded to the installation.
First 31 minutes went smoothly and quickly. At 31 minutes, the install seemed to freeze. I waited for about 7 8 minutes no progress. I Googled Win 10 installation freezes on my smart phone and found several references one of which was external devices. So I shut off my two 3 TB externals and at the same instant the installation continued smoothly and quickly. I really dont know if that was a coincidence or not. Total time was about 45 - 50 minutes, excluding the freeze time.
Issues: So far: One conflict with NCH Zip program - uninstalled it and the issue was resolved. I have found that boot time has increased I think due to my SSD being 90% full. That is easily remedied.
It will take me a while to learn how to comfortably navigate, but Win 10 has enough resemblance to Win 7 so that it is not a stranger. So far, I like it. The graphics is improved. I opened PS CC, LR, Elements 11 and a few other programs I frequently use - MS Word ,Excel, Gmail, ... everything works perfectly (so far). My two monitors work as before.
I might mention that my internet speed is 100mb, I have an i7 Intel processor & 16 GB of DDR 3 RAM. Im sure that helps performance and downloads. Im happy and anxious to discover new and improved features.
It is easy to configure MS permissions for personal data. So I do think some of the feedback from others about, Win 10 being "spyware", is valid. You have control over that issue.
Good luck with making your individual decisions!!

This sentence - "It is easy to configure MS permissions for personal data. So I do think some of the feedback from others about, Win 10 being "spyware", is valid. You have control over that issue, should read not valid. "is valid is a typo.
Mark, I installed the free program "Classic Menu" and navigation of Windows 10 is no longer a problem.
I'm finding navigation pretty easy. I researched quite a bit prior to upgrading. It helped in the transition. I'm finding the desktop easy, fun and clever. I love the "Task View" icon in the system tray. One click displays every open window. Very cool.
BTW: right clicking the "Start icon" bring up a menu with all the "good old and familiar Win 7 features. Also cool!!
Thanks for the reply. Have fun with Win 10!!

I upgraded yesterday, less than one hour. Most things work, I haven't tried my scanner yet - it's on one of my Power Macs. I am having an issue with opening "All Settings". I want to lock down access from the outside. Every time I click on "Settings" a new window briefly flashes then disappears.
Other than that, it seems okay.
Try this:
Click on Start (Window)
Go to Settings
See if "Privacy" shows up - then set your preferences.
If that does not work - try typing "Settings" in the search box - bottom - right side of system tray. If you still have it display then disappear, reboot and try again.
Good luck,
Mark
I installed Windows 10. My DVD no longer worked. I tried downloading an app, but it did not tell me which of the apps would work on my laptop. Bought a DVD app but it did not work. Recognied the drive and loaded but would not play. Tried getting in contact with Microsoft, but because of the long wait. I never got through. Could not schedule a call because no time was available fot the next 3 or 4 days. Reverted back to Windows 7. All works well again. Think I will stay here.

Thanks, Mark, but same results. I've been professionally involved in computer/software support since the mid-'60's. I just know there is a work around, I just have to find it. Since I haven't (been able to) changed any settings, it's probably related to an inherited Windows 8.1 setting. I've got a strange feeling that that 10.8 will fix it.
Thanks again, the light in our back yard is begging for me and a camera to come out and play.
