OK, I pre-ordered the Nikon, but wonder what others think of the specs of the Nikon vs the tamron or sigma. Of course the non-Nikons have a little greater range on the low side, 150 vs 200 and more on the topside, 500 vs 600.

Lets begin by placing things into perspective. The lens made by Nikon is a professional lens and when ready to sell it in the second hand market you will fetch most of your investment.
There is no significant difference between a 500 and a 600mm lens. Chances are excellent that if you just step forward you will reach those 600mm with your 500.
Construction and optically wise you have a better lens.

This Nikon is still not a pro lens, but it has constant f5.6. 50mm and 100mm are not a big difference, and it's a Nikon.

 How do you know about its construction and optical quality?

A "professional" lens with no nano coating. :)

You needn't bother answering since you are obviously a Nikon "fan". I'm not going to go round and round with a "fan".

For $ 1400 or so it's NOT a professional lens...

I don't see anything about pro performance or pro- build in this nikon write up:
" allows anyone, from those new to super-telephoto photography to experienced photo enthusiasts, to easily enjoy sharp, blur-free rendering throughout the entire zoom range."
http://www.nikon.com/news/2015/0804_lens_02.htm
or this:
"The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR is an exhilarating new lens option, giving enthusiast FX and DX-format photographers the ability to go further "
http://www.dpreview.com/products/nikon/lenses/nikon_200-500_5p6e_ed_vr

Looks like just another price point, consumer grade, marketing ploy.

The Nikon may turn out to be a VERY good competitor to the Sigma and Tamron lenses. Its more expensive, and a 2.5X zoom range compared to the others' 4X zoom range so the difference is indeed significant (and it is a full pound heavier). Nikon reasoning to limit the zoom was most likely so they could attain the fixed F5.6 aperture and avoid a variable aperture lens. Make no mistake, this is a Nikon CONSUMER level lens when it comes to build quality, but at the price point I know there are going to be many Nikon shooters who will be seriously looking at it as an option. It should even be compatible with a 1.4X TC on most Pro and Pro-sumer Nikon bodies.

Thanks very much for all who answered. I am still considering to keep this ordered, or cancel it. Problem is,
A, I am not professional so don't get any revenue back for my expenditures.
B, I have GAS a lot and want to stretch my skills, without going totally broke in the process.
C, I love all kinds of photography, but can't afford a $10K lens to do it.
D, I see a lot of pictures here that are superb and with not nearly as expensive equipment as I already own.

So, my quandary goes on...

It is Nikon's answer to Tamron and Sigma with regards to their two lenses that have been purchased by many on here. I like the fact that it is a constant 5.6 and I am sure that Nikon looked at starting it at 200 and ending at 500mm due to many have either the 70-200 or 55-200 in their arsenal now. Just my opinion.
I will sure look at purchasing this lens for the constant aperture alone, vs. the other two.

I think MT Shooter's assessment is logical. I am very hopeful that Nikon decided to do everything possible to keep image quality (resolution) up relative to their competition. The reduced zoom range of 2.5x should help in that regard. Surely the extra weight and the 95mm objective lens means they opted for quality over compactness. But for right now, we are just speculating. I wonder if professional reviewers such as DXO, DPreview and By Thom get test models ahead of the general public? I put in a vote for MT to get one right away to test for us.

You're welcome! It literly makes me laugh when "loyalists" to a brand go overboard. NO ONE has one of these lenses in their hands and yet optics and construction are being praised.
