Many of you may have noticed that I have posted a number of my recent Cactus Flower images in the Gallery and Main Section. I usually leave my images rather natural looking with just basic Ps CS6 adjustments and processing. For a change I tried a bit more manipulation, not only conversion to black & white but "blacked out" the background to give a "night" or "darkened studio" look. This was highly cropped as well. Any thoughts? My wife likes it so don't get too critical. ;-)

You can check, but Pentax K-20D with smc PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL [IF] SDM Lens. Yes, hand held. ISO 400 f/4 @ 1/350 @ 50mm. Feel free to ask about shooting conditions and why I chose the equipment I did for this shot. I shot others of the same flower with another camera and lens as well.

Well, I am glad your wife like them but...

Have you checked the quality 1:1? There seems to be problems in there...

See details...

I like them both.

If you blow them up enough then any picture will break down. Here, at this size and even on download they look good.

It's an older 14MP camera. Cropped heavily and here is the original shot...

As shot, RAW converted to jpg.

Obviously no where near 1:1. I checked it at 1:100 and yes, it looks like Kodacolor 400 film, grainy.

And your D800e is a great camera, no stupid AA filter.

Also I knew that camera gives the best file at ISO 100 to 200. But that was not possible this time. I should have gone to ISO 800 and used f/8 @ 1/350 sec to keep the entire flower sharp. But more noise. I used this image because I liked the lighting and composition. I have other images of the same flower from a few minutes later as the light changed that were taken with a K-5 and a 135mm lens and are far "sharper" but the lighting is not what I wanted.

I love the rich tonal range. It's a very appealing image in b&w. I'd print at 8x10 and see how it looks on the wall :)
