I have an old (50 years) Gossen Luna Six Pro that I used in my film camera days. It uses the old ASA system which I assume will covert to our current ISO settings. Will it work the same way for readings? The old battery in it isn't strong enough to give me a reading so I need to find new ones if it is worth while and will work with my current and future cameras.

I still use my Luna-Pro F (Flash) and it still serves me well. especially when balancing light sources.

I do not think you will get a lot for it if you sell it so it is well worth keeping.

Should work fine if you can find batteries.

Is there a direct relationship between ASA and ISO or is there the proverbial Crop Factor?

ASA stood for the American Standards Association And ISO stands for the International Standards Organization. The ratings are interchangeable, and it is not effected by crop factor. These are a system to denote the sensitivity of the film (or sensor) to light. It is not so important today because you can just change the ISO on the fly. Back in the film days you had to have an idea of what you were shooting so you could carry the best emulsion and speed.

As for batteries, there are a couple of choices. B&H sells Wein cells which are a zinc/air replacement for the original PX625 & PX13 mercury batteries. The other option is an adapter fro C.R.I.S. Camera Services. They sell an adapter holds 2 #386 silver oxide cells & reduces the voltage to 1.35 volts. I have both & they work just fine in my old Luna Pro.

The ISO was introduced to replace both the ASA and DIN ratings. It's the same as ASA and DIN and to be correct it has to have both number i.e. ISO 100/21.

I have a Gossen Luna Six with the spot meter attachment. I have no problems getting batteries for it. It comes from the seventies but still works perfectly. ISO and ASA are interchangeable so that's not a problem.

I love that meter particularly since it allows me to measure very slow exposures but I have to admit that I have supplemented it with a Sekonic L758DR that includes flash metering. The Sekonic gets most of my attention now but the Gossen is still loved and used sometimes.

It will work fine once you replace the batteries.. ISO and ASA are Identical. The only difference between it and newer ones is that the newer ones MAY have better sensitivity or support flash etc.. but any light meter is better than no light meter.. The one in the camera is fine for many things but it doesn't cover everything.

That should work quite well. As for batteries, nicksr1125, is absolutely correct. I have a 1971 Nikon F. Searching the web for a battery for it, I found C.R.I.S. I can't tell you how many of those adapters I have, but they are the best.

There are some adapters being sold on ebay for quite a bit less, but they don't have the regulator circuitry to bring the voltage to the correct amount. The adapters are a bit pricey, but will last you a lifetime. The batteries you'll use you can purchase at any drugstore for quite a bit less than the Wein batteries.

I've used the Wein batteries and they just don't last for crap.

Hi Bugfan - Thanks for your reply. Do you have a source for those batteries you would share? Preferably online. :-D
