Win 10 - Messages that your PC is not upgradeable.
If you do not have the new Windows icon in the right hand side of system tray showing this may fix that:
Right click on the date/clock - in the system tray. (extreme right)
Select "customize notification icons"
A new screen will appear - at the very bottom click in the square - a check mark should appear
Click OK
Close the window
Now look at the icons in the task bar just left of the date/time
Does a window icon appear?
If it does, repeat steps 1 - 3 except uncheck the square.
Now look at the icons again.
Is the Windows icon still there?
If you received an email from MS saying that your PC cannot upgrade to Win 10 and you do have a Win icon in the system tray, do this:
1. Click the Windows icon
2. In the new window, upper right corner, click the three horizontal lines.
3. In the menu, select "Check my PC"
Now you will get a list of possible reasons why you cannot upgrade to Win 10. Most can be easily fixed.

My fix is even easier, don't even try! If you are happy with your present OS. Why upgrade now? Surely over the next couple of years they will publish revisions/improvements to the original release.
From what I have read, (so far) most people who have actually installed Win 10, report excellent reviews. I'm in no rush, but I will definitely upgrade. I have had some disappointments in the past with Vista (terrible) and Millennium (also terrible). However, XP & 7 were and still are excellent. I'm not down on MS, so I look forward to the improved, Win 10 OS. Just my opinion.
I posted the "fixes/info" to help those who are having difficulty. I spent many hours finding solutions, so I thought I'd share the results of my efforts.

Mark, I wasn't 'dissing' your suggestions. It was great of you to pass on your hard earned knowledge! I just don't see why we should be MS Ginnie Pigs. I think that's the only reason the always offer free upgrades; they should find and fix the bugs before foisting it on the real world.
Thanks for the clarification. Actually, MS has been diligently searching for and finding and fixing conflicts, errors, ... They have had 1,000,000 "insiders" using Win 10 and reporting their findings to MS. When they did report those issues, MS fixed and or rewrote the code to eliminate the errors. This continued for quite a while prior to the release on July 29. One can argue that MS should find all the errors prior to the July 29 release, but Apple does the same thing. That's why they have continuous updates to their software.
I do understand your point - it is well taken.

Our son is one of the people MS sent a beta copy to last summer for testing and comments; he thinks it is pretty good and has been "pitching' me to upgrade, but if (when) it screws up, he's about 500 miles away, and I don't have anything near the skills necessary to fix program problems. It's hard enough fixing the errors I make
I appreciate your position. Tell him to move closer! LOL :)
Exactly what the tech support guy at Microcenter said.

I have windows 7 and have tried everything and there is no windows icon in my tray. I guess I am not in the first wave of downloads.
I assume you tried the steps I outlined above? I did not have the icon displaying either, but it was there and did not display until after I executed those steps.

I have all downloads except skype.
Either there is an update of Windows that needs to be completed or maybe yu are correct - just wait for MS.
You may want to try do a manual Windows update as a final check.
Good luck,
Mark
