Finally cut the cord

I just realized how much trouble social media has caused in my life. Too much time wasted on likes and status updates.

I used it the keep track of family that I haven't seen in years. But sometimes people you haven't seen in years are better left in your past. Even family.

I did a quick search on deleting a Facebook profile--not a simple deactivation that is reversible. With only a moment of hesitation, I cut the cord.
They gave me 14 days to change my mind and I have to admit that it will be hard not to log in. I've already deleted the app from my smartphone.

Good for you! I have been thinking about the same thing but do have your courage.

I went through and killed them all: Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Google+. So really, the hedgehog is all I've got left.

I guess the batteries on my S4 will last a lot longer now.

I couldn't believe the grief I got from some of my family members when I told them I was leaving FB. It was never really my cup of tea anyway and then you have people getting frustrated with you if you don't check in as often as they think you should. My niece was offended that I didn't make a reunion she had because I didn't know anything about it, her comment was that it had been of FB several times over the past couple months. When I told her I no longer have an account she acted like I'd just punched her in the stomach. Too many take all the social media stuff way to seriously IMHO.

Family - and real friends - know how to call and really communicate. You know, via actual voice. A method in which you can sense the emotion of everything being said. No need for emoticons.

I for one think in taking a step back from "multi-media" you are actually taking a step forward in improving the quality of your communications.

Exactly. And since I have no social media apps on my phone, I noticed the smiles and nods I got from people as they walked by....at least the ones who weren't texting.

When we make the choice to not be "lemmings" - we find that there often exists a path which is not self destructive ;)

I've never signed up for any social media program in my life.
I'm too busy and could care less what someone is having for dinner.

I signed on to Facebook years ago. Then I started seeing what Facebook was doing, didn't like what I saw and have just left it alone.

Funny you should mention that. I was getting increasingly annoyed with one of my FB friends who felt the need to show her husband's breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I'd been slowly weaning myself off of it for a few months; posting less. Mostly pictures taken on my morning walks or my composites. I think I may have given about 2-3 hours to FB a day.
