But -- a different dragon!

Do you suppose there is a helipad symbol on the top of that pole?

Female Blue Dasher?
Female Blue Dasher?...

And same kind of dragon. You got it. It's Mrs B Dasher. This is a wonderful shot, Sherry! I think the females are even prettier than the males. So many colors.

Thank you, Donna.
I'm so glad I got the ID right this time -- I was about to run out of pages when I finally found her in the book!

Thanks, Earl. The best thing about this perch is that I don't have to leave the shade of porch to shoot whatever lands there.

What we need, Sherry, is a source for identifying these dragons by color, size, field marks, etc. As much as I like the new field guide, it's still hard to look at every single picture to find a match.

Indeed we do! I only looked through my new book and did not do any internet search. Since reading your comment, I have. Check this link:
http://www.insectidentification.org/dragonflies-and-damselflies.asp
scroll to the bottom of the page to the "BugFinder".
I put in the info for this visitor and Blue Darner was one of the possibilities that came up. This site might just be what we need - or I need - you seem to be doing fine!

EDIT: Dasher. Dasher. I meant to say Blue Dasher.

Aha! Just bookmarked that site. Thanks, Sherry, and I do indeed need a better way to identify besides perusing through countless pics. Dragonfly identification is new to me. When I first started posting dragon photos to closeup, I thought all the blue ones were Blue Dashers. I later went back to my posts and did some name changing.

And I misspoke! It listed a blue DASHER. I can't even keep it straight when it's printed out in front of me!
