That is often the case in Madeira, we have been going there for many years when they had the shortest landing strip to be seen!! It has been lengthened twice. Madeira is a very windy island and the pilots need special training to land and take off there. My landing was quite hairy, like being on a Big Dipper and rocking and rolling from side to side. The Captain said if he couldn't get down first go he would go around and try again, you are over the sea to come in. Wish I had been taking pictures earlier, just started 2 years ago, I have seen some really howling gales there, with trees bent in half.
