Greetings to all,
I am heading to Italy for vacation and looking for suggestions on a good lens to take. I don't want to lug around a camera bag so I'm looking for a 1 lens suggestion. I appreciate any input from the group. I will be taking a D750.

I like my Nikkor 28-300mm for an all purpose lens. For low-light and weight a nifty 50 is always good.

For travel, with only one lens, the 28-300.

But why not take the nifty-fifty too?

Tamron SP 28-105 f2.8. Only available used - I would get one from KEH.

Personally I'd want something around the 24mm mark for the wide end. How's the 24-120 f4 these days...and I'd agree with a fast 50mm for extreme low light areas.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have both the 28-300 and a fast fifty so it sounds like a plan.

I took my D750 with a 17-35 2.8 it will do it all. Rent it if you can't purchase it. In Rome wide and fast for your night shots do the walking tour in Rome at night.

If you plans include a visit to Venice, take a ultra wide angle lens. In Venice, you can only back up so far, then you splash into a canal. While in Europe on a cruise I used a Tamron 18-270, but you'll need a lens made for full frame, Tamron 16-300mm. It is short, and expands as you zoom. But, again in Venice, something in the 10-24mm range will be great.

Nikon 24-120 blows away the 28-300 in terms of image quality, it is constant f4 and at 24mm is better suited to me for travel. Of course it is also expensive, especially if you already own the 28-200.

As far as an "extra" lens to throw in - I would leave home the 50 and buy a 20/2.8 (or a 24/2.8) because for me wide is more important than long for general travel use. Unless you know you will be shooting critters or have another need for long length, I would consider wide angle.

Sounds like you are all set. I recently amtrakked from Jacksonville FL to Seattle WA and back to Jax with a D7100, 8-16 Sigma, and 18-300 3.5~6.3 Nikkor and did fine. I could have skipped the Sigma if necessary. A fast fifty was not needed -- just boosted the ISO a bit.

Great point...if he's not willing to go with the 24-120, then a fast wide angle prime would be great.

This setup works very well for travel like what you are doing on this trip. The zoom will get the most use and the 50mm will work well in low light at night or indoors. Keep in mind the 28-300 on the D750 can also be used in low light with great results by just slightly bumping up the ISO. The 50mm is so light and compact there is no reason to not take it but I suspect the 28-300 won't be off your D750 very much.
Enjoy your trip!

A question to all who might be interested in the Nikkor 24-120 lens.

E-Bay are offering new Nikkor AFS 24-120mm for $575 plus a 3-yr warranty for $85.00. It’s stated to be a “direct import item.” Warranty is through seller who I believe is Square Trade.

Then I see that Adorama have the same lens (refurb. by Nikon) for $850.00. New, the lens from Adorama is $1,297.00 with Nikon US warranty.

Which way would you go if you really wanted that lens?
