Last Friday, I was on the beach with my family and noticed a large bird near the waterline that seemed to be in distress. I identified the bird as an immature Northern Gannet and saw that it had a fishhook lodged in its right wing. I called New York Audubon and they put out a call for help on the internet. Before I could return to the beach the call was answered by an on duty firefighter who is the founder of Wildlife In Need Of Rescue and Rehabilitation. He called a firehouse closer to the scene and they sent an engine company to retrieve the bird. The bird is now at the rehab center, the hook has been removed and the bird is being given antibiotics and vitamins. After a few more days of rest, the Gannet is due to be released back to the wild on Monday or Tuesday.
