While I was out pulling weeds today, this little family showed up.
I love these shots, Phil! I've never seen a quail!
Prairie chickens. Quail are usually smaller but regardless those are great pictures. Thanks for sharing them with us. The chick are really what made the second picture kick.

Bushymonster,
Thanks for viewing and commenting on these images.
It's truly wonderful when those little fuzz balls hatch and start walking around with mom and dad. A think that every American family needs to watch the caring aspects of the quail families. A lot to be learned.

Snecko,

We live in the middle of the Salt Lake Valley of Utah. Our suburban neighborhood is a common place to see quails and mourning doves just about any time of the day. These images were captured on the sidewalk in front of our house. The chick looks like a yellow golf ball with legs when he starts to run. Great fun.

Kingmapix,
Thanks for the nice compliment. You are correct about the family structure of the quail family. It seems that mom and dad are always together protecting the chicks.
They are truly a unique bird. They have to be on their toes and ready to run and actually hide from their enemy, the ready to kill, coyote. They spend more than 75% of their life on the ground. Their main threat in life is the coyote. They are a very nice looking bird and a good dinner. It's better than chicken.
