bald faced storm trooper

The nest is by a window under scaffolding next to my house. It is perhaps between four and five feet away from the window. If I reach, I can get the camera about a foot away.

Last night I attempted to move some of these boards from inside the house to make room and to pull it nearer, but the effort failed and after the window was timely closed a swarm of monsters were bouncing off the window pain like heavy hail.

This morning I opened the window and reached out and took a bunch of mediocre shots (like this one). The flash is inside the house behind the window at an angle about six or seven feet away. It is currently bald (no diffusion) so that I can get more light to the target.

I am thinking that a telephoto lens within the house on a tripod shooting through the open window with remote shutter might be a way to go, if I can figure out how to shorten the working distance.

There are opportunities here.. ranging between getting stung and getting some great shots. A problem I have handholding the 100mm macro lense close to the nest is getting proper focus - Auto focus will work from the distance, but the light is poor and often it will search as I get closer. If I switch it to manual, it kind of works, but it is a crap shoot since my head isn't next to the camera and I don't have live view on this camera (I am using an old 1D mark iiN since it will let me get a shutter of 250 with flash), but no live view.

Any and all advise much appreciated with the goal being to some decent macro shots of this nest's bald faced storm troopers.

Do you have access to small incandescent or LED light, that you can use to provide focusing illumination? It needs to be on for only a short period of time.

Your 100-mm macro lens is quite a bit short for shooting through the window. Without strong auxiliary illumination, maximum aperture size of longer lenses will make A-F even less reliable.

I like this idea, with stronger light, I can hold the end of the 100mm nine or ten inches from the nest and luck for shots, counting on AF. Thank you!
