First time I have ever seen the Male Wasp. I frequently see the wingless females. The Skipper stayed put for me & the Cicada was missing a leg. I found it out on the road when walking the dog...

Nice shots. Several years ago, I was playing golf late in the afternoon and I ran across a swarm of males flying low in the middle of the fairway. They were hovering over a big female that was crawling along on the ground. One of the males suddenly dipped down, picked up the female, and flew off across the fairway. It was an incredible sight. I didn't know they did that. Kidnapping, I mean....... or should that be 'cowkillernapping......?
It was still hanging around my outdoor AC condenser (like the Cicada Killer last week) later today & I got a few more shots of it. Actually there were 2 flying around. I only got as close as 1/2 life sized so as not to get stung.... Cropped the resultant image

Males can't sting. They may LOOK aggressive, but only female can sting - and she makes up for what males don't have. :)
You found the leg out on the road, bloody marvellous. lol.
Cow killer is very nice. Can't say I've ever seen a male before...
Just caught a female a short while ago. Will release her into a potted plant to see if I can get some images...
