An interview with DavidT,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
40 years - off and on, mostly off. But, the advent of digital photography revived my interest in the last 15 years.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No, formal training. I took up digital photography to shoot jewelry for my wife and metalsmith friends. I started doing mostly macro and close-up photography. Now, since I retired, I am exploring many other areas (e.g., landscape, abstract, etc.).

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
Depending on the subject, it could a combination of several factors including visual and emotional impact, creativity, as well as proper technique (e.g., composition, tonality, etc.).

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used a Canon 5D Mk III camera with a 100mm macro lens on a tripod to shoot the computer chip at close to 1:1 ratio. Lighting was a continuous tungsten lamp.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I usually don't use Photoshop very often, but I did for this image. The original image of the computer chip had drab orange, brown, and blue colors. I used PSE to replace the colors and add the star gradient. I then processed the image using the solarization filter in Nik's Color Efex Pro 4.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
Recently, I've been influenced by abstract photography. For this image, I was trying to create something unusual, but recognizable.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
I'm constantly experimenting with my images (old and new) as I learn new techniques.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I don't think there is any one thing to know. To me, making a good photograph is a combination of what to include and what not to include in the image.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
A Canon 90mm tilt-shift lens with a 25mm extension tube. I use this lens for most of my close-up images because it allows me to get a 1:2 ratio and the flexibility to choose the plane of focus. It's also a very sharp lens useful for portraits and landscapes.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I use ambient light as much as possible and rarely use a flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?

An interview with kizzyk,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
Been interested and pursuing photography since being a member of my high school yearbook staff over 40 years ago.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have no formal training. I enjoy all types of photography.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
In my opinion, a photo that stands out is one that has artistic appeal and/or elicits an emotional response.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used the Nikon D5200 and the 18-140mm lens and took the shot handheld. The original shot was post-processed in Lightroom and Photoshop Elements 10. Extracted the primary focus and layered it onto a new blurred background.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I enjoy the post processing process and frequently (if not eagerly) make use of an arsenal of applications such as Lightroom, Elements, Topaz, Perfect Photo Suite, Snapheal, etc.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I belong to a small, local photo club that plans various excursions
whereby we encourage and share what we know about settings and composition. On this particular day, we visited Mansfield Reformatory of Shawshank Redemption fame. It so happened that Civil War reenactors were on site. Lots of interesting photo ops on that day!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Given that the day was rainy and not too friendly to photographic equipment, I was quite pleased with results.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
I wish I had had a better understanding of various exposure settings.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My favorite (useful) photo accessory other than my camera would probably be my tripod.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I think I'd like to purchase the Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S lens someday. It gets great reviews, has a fast aperture, and seems to be useful for portraits, events, and landscapes.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
Simple external flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I couldn't do photography, I'd probably do photo restoration or manipulation of others' photos for artistic purposes.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
I don't know how funny but it always stays with me. Back in the film days as a yearbook adviser and the main photographer, I spent an entire day at a sporting event taking pictures without film in the camera

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Haven't set anything up formally as of yet. At one time I had work shown at FanArt Review.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I really don't qualify for giving out much advice, because I still consider myself a verifiable amateur who just has fun experimenting with photography
