I have the Sony a6000. I think it is brilliant. I had a Canon 5D Mk 11 and have sold it. I now just have the a6000. Very light, two fabulous lenses, I no longer enter club comps, so am not worried about the ff. If you are not competitive and don't want huge photos, then the a6000 takes terrific photos- particularly in low light - and will be all you require. But if you do enter club comps or want to enlarge greatly, then go with the A7 II or one of its "frères", and you will still be a winner.

The key question for me is standardization. Sony has a long history of making proprietary products mandatory. My a6000 was a pretty good camera, but you had to use a Sony flash. And if you were doing video, you had to use a Sony microphone (which was not very good). This is not only in the cameras, they do the same kind of thing with camcorders. For a long time they only let you use their own memory-sticks (Now you can use sdcards).

Just to clarify, my Canon 430 EXII and an older Promaster (pentax) 7500 both work on my a6000. While it only operates in manual mode, the same can be said for many third party flashes as well. Overall, I would prefer a dedicated version, so in that sense, I agree with you.

If you're doing this for travel, get the a6000, or wait for the a7000, rumored to be announced in August. Full frame lenses will still be large and heavy.

Travel at least three times a year. Am considering switching from the two cameras I travel with, Nikon d 610 and 810, to a mirrorless system. Always bring two cameras when I travel. Am looking at the Sony full frame 7Rii and the half frame alpha a6000 with the 70-200 lens and the 16-70 Sony Zeiss lens. Is it worth an extra $1000 in getting the full frame with the half frame or two half frame cameras? That would only make it a difference of $1000.Would love some comments and opinions on this setup

There is rumor of an A7000 on the horizon. Sony is pretty good at keeping secrets as the A7Rii capability caught everyone off guard. I want to see if this supposed A7000 borrows some capabilities from the A7Rii such as in body 5 axis stabilization and phase detection? If so, I will get one. I find I use my crop sensor cameras far more than my full frame Sony A99 anyway.

There is also rumor that some 3rd party is close to release of an adapter to allow the A7Rii to auto-focus Nikon lenses. This is still rumor, so I can't confirm how real this rumor is, or how well it will work.

Here is one such rumor page:
