Snitched Hubby's SX50 today and shot some things around the yard. I used the macro setting on some of the shots; everything was shot on full auto. I was just trying to see if I could do any better with this camera than in the past. I think I'm going to have to actually get out the manual and read it! So many here (Linda from Maine, DOOK, and angelak come immediately to mind) produce such great shots with this camera I am inspired to learn more about using it! I picked it up several weeks ago for this purpose, Hubby saw how much fun I was having with it, and reclaimed it as "his"! He caught me today and I was chastised. Meh.
I must have really fat fingers or I'm a real klutz. I kept hitting buttons on the back of the camera and accidently changing settings - most often the self-timer. Hubby always has his greatest problem in hitting the video record button.
Maybe I can get up really early in the mornings while Hubby is still sleeping and get some practice with it. Yeah. That's gonna happen.
My planted "wildflowers" finally started to bloom - but I have NO IDEA what the names of any are

Another wildflower - this stands about 30" tall - I love it when they come up to meet you

Fiesta Hibiscus - I am not getting the profusion of blooms I had expected (and hoped for)

This is one strange looking butter! Received my Butterfly Field Guide today and a quick look told me it is going to take some extensive study to figure out the subtle differences in all the orage butterflies around here!

Let's see. Zinnia, Mrs Card and Cosmos=fine shots, Sherry! You had such a good time, it makes me want to snitch Vic's SX40 and go to town. You must have done some early shooting. It stormed here all afternoon.

Then add the butterfly, and I'm done!
Thanks for your compliment, Donna, but the camera did all the work on these! We didn't get much rain here today; only 1/10 inch according to my rain gauge. These were shot around 5ish, after the rain had passed.
Thanks for looking!

LOL I give up!
I see you saw!
And I also meant to say - thanks for all the ID's!
Just sent you a PM, and I'm going to try to find out the ID of your butterfly.

Sherry, your butter might be a Pearl Crescent. It's certainly a killer shot of whatever it is. Fantastic!!!

A very pretty and cheerful assortment to start the morning!

Not bad for a beginner. Seriously, these are damn good, & join the big thumb club, lol--if I got a dollar for every time I've accidentally hit the auto timer with the ball of my thumb, I would be a rich old dude by now. Good shots, Sherry. :-)

sherry you did a terrific job on these with the sx50! the butterfly shot is so cool and you did a great job on the flowers and cardinal.
I shot quite a view 5-second inadvertent videos my first few times out with that camera :)
The hibiscus is stunning, and the butterfly delightful!
Shutter speed a bit slow (1/160) on the cardinal. You could keep the ISO in auto, don't worry about aperture, and just set the shutter speed (Tv mode).
Tony Britton has been posting some astonishingly gorgeous shots on UHH. He also has some SX50 tips on his website:

Just beautiful Sherry. I love the shot of the hibiscus.

Super shots Sherry. I bought that camera for my daughter last year and she is delighted with it. However, I did forward your wonderful images to her just to show her what her camera is truly capable of.

I don't think a Pearl Crescent, Donna. Here are a couple more shots - not such good shots, but they do show the wing patterns.
I couldn't find anything in my book that exactly matched the patterns. Very similar to a Painted Lady - do they have to "exactly" match? Did some exploring at BAMONA without (yet) any different results.
