Traveling too Italy this fall.

I have Cannon 6D / 24-105 lens
Also have 17-40 1.4 L Zoom.

Dudes here suggest I take 35 mm fixed.

What to do?

My nephew went to Italy last year. He had a FF canon and all prime lenses. He told me that he used a 1.4 or 1.2 wide angle more than any other. Next was a mid-range, something around 85mm I think. He said only a couple of times did he wish that he had a long lens. He also said that the ability to shot in low light without a flash was very important for him.

Having been to Italy, there is wisdom in wide angle lenses. Things are very close together. But there is also really nice scenery and things that are much farther away.

The food was good. The scenes were good. Driving about gave me a heart attack!

I think your fine with the 24-105 and 17-40 wide angle zoom. The 35 fixed really isn't going to buy you a lot. The two you have are both L lenses and will take great pictures, the zoom is a 1.4 and that will let you take any low light indoor pictures you want. I went last August and took the 50mm 1.8, the 24-105 and a 75-300. I used the 24-105 the most. One day I went out with just the 50mm and wished I had the 24-105 with me all freaking day. Even though it is only f4 I really never missed the flash inside the churches and museums.

Have a great trip!!!

Gary I've never been to Italy, but I live in Rome and shoot a 6D. I like to shoot wide angles for architecture and landscapes. The 6D allows you to jack up the ISO, but has its limit. With f/4's you're going to need a tripod a lot, which is more than worthwhile if you're allowed to set it up. I would pick the zoom that made me the most comfortable and add a wide prime that is at least as fast as f/2, preferably f/1.4 for interiors and night photography. Hope you have a great trip and post lots of pics.

OK, I have no idea why they say 35mm fixed. Both the lenses you named cover that range. Oh, your 17-40 is f4, not 1.4. Which 24-105 do you have? The f4 L or the f3.5-5.6 STM?

I have covered entire events with a 6D and 24-105 f4 L. The 6D does very well in low light, esp if you shoot RAW and have good PP software.

Outdoors or reasonably lite interiors you are covered. If your 35mm is the f2 or f1.4 then they must be saying take it for low light. In things like building interiors with poor light I would want something wider than 35mm. My low light indoors lens is a 14mm f2.8 manual focus. For outdoors in really low light I have my 50mm f1.8.

When I toured Italy I took the 24-105 and the 70-200 2.8 isii and the 7D, which is an APS-C body. About 70% of the shots were with the 24-105. I wish I had carried my FF also but hadn't (especially in museums and that too in the Vatican in Raphael's room to shoot the murals). With your 6D and it's low light capabilities, you'd be fine with the 17-40 and the 24-105.

Having traveled extensively in western Europe, I've found that the inside of their famous places are as interesting as the landscapes. Therefore think low light photography, without flash, and possibly without a tripod. In many cases, flash is forbidden, due to the danger of light affecting the artwork, and for the general enjoyment of all visitors. I'd take the 24-105 and your 35mm, but only if it's faster than your zoom.
A good tripod and monopod will help too.

This is the third time you've asked this question. You have 4 posts, and the first was an introduction asking to be accepted here.

I hope not. You are a pest.

I like traveling light, not loaded down or preoccupied with changing lenses.

I shoot Nikon so not familiar with the 6D ISO settings.

With my camera, I'd set the ISO to auto 64 to 1600, and use one lens. In your example it would be the 24-105.

Two lenses is easy. You're fast lens sounds great but you will also probably use the standard zoom when reach is important and light is decent.
