LR ?

Here's the scenario:
Once in a while, after downloading images from a card and unchecking all images, when I click on the images to start the process of looking at them larger before I choose, the image stays small. The method I discovered to make them behave is to exit and re-enter LR.
What I need to know is what I could have done just before or during the downloading process, and is there a less clumsy method of either preventing or eliminating the problem.
Thanks, people.

Have you checked the size slider for the thumbnail size?

I assume you are on the import screen and are deciding which images to check and which ones not to check.
At the bottom of the import screen is a "Thumbnail slider" (mentioned above) move this fully to the right.

Double click an image to examine it properly, double click again to force the image back to the grid.

If that does not work for you, please state Op system and LR version, and confirm you are on the import screen.

So good to see you getting more active again, Searcher! Hope you've had a full recovery. You were greatly missed...

Thanks, Searcher.
1st, this has happened only 2-3 times. & yes, I tried the thumbnail slider, of course. Also tried to find a reference to it in Kelby's Adobe LR book.
As far as I can remember, it has happened when I worked in LR on other things before putting in my card to download, rather than that being the 1st action I performed. I'm 80, so who knows about my memory.
I use a Mac Book Pro with Yosemite 10.10.3 & LR 5.7.1.

I haven't seen this problem before, so I have no tried and tested solution. If the situation recurs to the point of becoming intolerable I would suggest resetting your Lightroom preferences. I have no knowledge of Macs, but it appears to me to be a Lightroom rather than a Mac problem. I have also searched the Adobe forum but there appears to be no comparable bug showing up on other computers.

Just one thought strikes, open your preferences:

Edit > Preferences > File Handling tab

Near the bottom, There are two caches, what sizes are they?

Click Purge Cache in both cases. then click on OK. If your cache is filled that might explain things, it should auto empty but it may be too small to work effectively. I keep mine at 10GB for the #Adobe cache and 3GB for the Video cache.

Thanks, Searcher.

Next time I open LR, I'll look at the caches. As I wrote, It happens infrequently, and I found a quick fix. Some stuff just is, I guess. Maybe I'll chance upon a cause eventually.
