HACK LYSOL NO-TOUCH - A NEW PHOTO TRIGGER

When I saw the $10 LYSOL NO-TOUCH KITCHEN SYSTEM  on TV, I saw it as a Trigger for birds, bees, bugs, squirrels and those confounded pesky humming birds that Nikonian72 is forever photographing to make me feel like an amateur (which I am certainly compared to Mr. Nikonian 72, altho I believe the difference is purely attributable to the fact that he uses Nikon, should he have Canon or god help him a lowly Sony in his hand, he would be shambles!!)

Back to the HACK. The unit comes with two refills so if married buy two units, one to entertain and passify your wife and one to Hack.
1) Remove the batteries from the bottom, typical lid there. Inside of the battery chamber there are three screws a long small Phillips removes these.
2) The Grey "pretty" cover removes easily as does the white below it. The white one contains a red filter that may be necessary later.
3) Next cut the wires. Two blacks, so one cut close to connection, the other include some black insulation so as to identify. The connectors on the body of the unit will have to be bent to allow removal of the "motor-pump" unit.
4) Once removed the motor unit is opened by 4 screws. Within the sanitizer pump piston is removed by removing the the shaft from the gear and removing the connecting rod.
5) At this point there are several possibilities depending on what you intend to do and what equipment you have.
5A) There is a normally open - normally closed switch that controls the motor. that switch can be used for an IR Trigger unit switch as for Sony and some other cameras.
5B) The motor can be left in place and used to drive the switch so that once triggered the camera fires perhaps each second by the cam that opens and closes the switch. This would require by passing the switch wires to the motor so that once triggered it runs until reset.
5C) The voltage that would drive the motor can be used for some trigger circuit not specified,,, but hopefully will be supplied by the UHH family.

Photo 1 shows shell taken apart, pop off front, remove bottom screws.
Photo 2 After motor unit removed
Photo 3 Shows triggering path.

Work the landing path into a platform for a squirrel or a bird and use the Hacked unit to trigger the camera.

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE YOUR USE OR IDEAS

Sorry Pat, like most screw drivers and odd socks ... Lost. But not before I took your watch apart for the fun of it.

Please note, the IR emitter and sensor and circuit board can be removed and separated for mounting as for example on a bird feeder. Also if the motor of switch are used to trigger a camera or flash there would be about a one second delay as the switch activating cam cycled.

Lowly Sony? You jest, my Sony's can run rings around my Nikons and a fair match to Canon.

Geez, I didn't know we had Rube Goldburgh here on UHH? LOL. Maybe a few rows of dominoes falling to initiate the mechanism should be added for effect.

Hey Rube, can you show us an actual in use installation of your squirrel and hummer catcher? I'm not good at visualizing gadgetry in action.

OK Croce, here goes. It works like the old grocery store door openers. cut the light beam/receiver and the circuit is activated.
===================
The Lysol unit has a IR sending lamp in the shower like upper part with two wires going to it. You can see it more clearly in photo 2 the white unit red and green wire going to it. This IR lamp is on when the unit is "on" -- power switch is at back of unit.

Photo 1 has a receiving unit that, if the unit were new, would be under the red filter. Like on a TV remote, TV set combo, except for this unit put your hand in the area break the path and the pump starts and lysol comes out.

The pump runs when the "electronic package in the unit" kick starts the motor. The motor runs one pump cycle and then there is a switch that turns the motor off. The switch, the yellow thing in photo 2, is activated by a cam driven by the motor and those white gears you see in the black box. The cam is the upper most one. I removed the motor and switch so you can see them.

So, depending on the camera, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, Pentax etc they are fired by a switch, voltage or some other way... how the voltage or switch are used depends on the camera ... or in some case flash as for dropping object trigger. Depends on camera and what you want to do. Given a problem and I may be able to advise.

For my older model Sony 230, it is IR clicker activated. So I would attach a simple SCR, silicon controlled rectifier, about $2 radio shack to switch the IR clicker on/off, or more simply add an IR bulb to the motor wires and that would activate the camera. Again depends on camera.

I would have to ask Nikoian 72 how to tempt a humming bird. the IR emitter and receiver would be where the bird would put it's head. Head in way of the beam would trigger the unit to fire the camera.

Tel me the situation and I can make suggestions. At a $10 price, (Walmart) it is like the old printers when they required you to by the ink from the printer company. Printers were a give away ,,,, the profit was company ink. With this "no Hands Lysol unit, you get a lot of electronics and possibilities for only $10 and the unit is simplistic compared to many of the designs I have seen that require compete build from expensive har to find parts. This fully assymbled, commercially tested, Lysol unit works and the assembly and R&D has been done for you in hopes you will buy refills of sanitizer. Simply stated, extend the wires and build a feeder platform and mount the, Lysol send and recieve unit, also camera/trigger connector and you are in the bird photo business. Ebay has "interval" timers and you order the camera plug in units for a few $. The plugs fit the specific cameras.

Bruce67, I have two beloved Sonys,, a-230 and a330 Sony is a step ahead of many cameras,,,, Nikon and Canon etc are all great, but Nikon and Canon are the basis of a religion the owners among the faithful who would defend their god regardless.

LOL ... I asked what time it was pullum, not for you to build me a watch! Let me try again. Do you have a pic of the gadget set up and ready to fire off so I can see how it and the camera look up in a tree or wherever?

Croce, do not be un loving and unappreciative, must be the heat and desert fever go to you... The unit will look like a bird feeder... I thought you said you could visualize... so look at a bird feeder... the key is the useful trigger unit that can be used in many applications. Hay, I just bought it yesterday and disassembled. I am not an ol retired guy like you I still work (76 y/o) and will work on the unit eventually. Key is knowing the unit has possibilities. Till then, buy one and keep your hands clean.

I get the feeling that like children ignorance is to belittle. Have fun. and LOL

I was in part jesting. Sony Alpha cameras are great and have many outstanding features, however there are things on the Nikon cameras that are not on Sony cameras, for instance on my D7000 I can reprogram through the menu to auto-focus and auto-focus lock through the button near the command dial (rear of camera) rather than use the shutter release button, I wish Sony would have provided that feature. I can't tell you how many times my heavy finger has taken the shot when I meant to focus. Yet, Sony's layout of buttons on the A850 and A900 are intuitive, easy and quick to use without a lot of thought. Each manufacturer of cameras has their strong and weak points, too bad we couldn't roll up all their strength into one camera.

Ok Pull,

I said: "I'm not good at visualizing gadgetry in action." NOT" being the operative word.

Thanks for putting up with me and trying to penetrate my thick skull. I did not know your thigamajig was still in the experimental stage. Send me pic when it flys. Take care in the meantime.

I must admit that this gizmo sure comes in cheaper than the wireless remote trigger mechanisms from Canon and Nikon. I think we need to have an annual "RUBE GOLDBERG TROPHY" for the most interesting contraption for photography application. LOL.
Nice work. It looks like it should work too, but I suspect you'll need to relocate your camera so the depth of field is wide enough to cover the 18" or so of the IR beam length and use manual focus and reasonably fast shutter speed since an animal can trigger it anywhere along that line. Just wait till the squirrels get their hands on this invention. They have a tendancy to do their own reverse engineering. LOL.
Just curious though. What's the delay between IR triggering and the motor initialization? Doesn't the motor noise scare away the bird?

Yes Bruce, I know Nikons are great, I greatly admire the wonderful work Nik-72 does,,, fantastic. My Sony is a basic one to utilize my old Minolta Lenses, but at $300 from Sony direct with the package lense, hard to beat. I have fun teasing Nikon and Canon people,,,because they are so adamant, but I always do it with a smile of admiration.

Cameras at this point in development are all excellent cameras will take great photos. It is, however frustrating when I am up against things like +/-1 on bracket range. We live around such problems. My next camera will be a super P&S, because I can wear one like I do my Panasonic TZ-3, always with me.

Croce, I will provide photos to the forum, but after reading your 76 replies I would fully expect to be heavily criticized for the color etc. Please try to add positive comments to postings to be constructive. For example: dPullum consider that most people do not even have a soldering iron. So your audience for this posting is limited! I would say, yep Croce you are right, however, the unit has great possibilities and if several pickup on it and use it that would be great. Croce,I suggest you google bird feeder and pick one.

Croce, what did you do in real life before retirement? By the way, I loved AZ, I did the Sitix Wafer plant air permitting for the plant north of Scottsdale, Maracopa county,, enjoyed the challange.
