My daughter just got this guy in her house, can anyone identify it. It doesn't seem to have a violin on it and is the size of a 50 cent piece

If you can post another photo that has a clearer view of the cephalothorax, maybe I can give it a shot.

I just called my daughter, she is going to try to get a better shot, she is using her cell phone
You might have better luck posting in the "True Macro" section
Even though I am a macro shooter and love shooting live spiders.... I do have a rule that I live by... Spiders in the house die, spiders outside are free to do as they please. Even though there are only a few spiders that are as dangerous as the recluse, Hobo, or Widow, all spiders have venom and many leave ulcerated sores that are very slow to heal. I won't kill a jumping spider anywhere, but all others would do well to stay outside. I have been bitten multiple times, indoors and outdoors while camping and I just don't want that to happen ever again.
A good thing to know about spiders is that most bites only occur from contact where pressure is placed upon the spider, such as when putting on a shoe, or rolling atop of one in your bed. Spiders do not generally attack people, they are more likely to seek a hiding spot.

Looks a lot like the one my Grand daughter calls " George". We haven't seen George for almost a month...possibly sufficient time for him to have made it to California?

I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you what it isn't. It's NOT a brown recluse. I think that bugguide.net will give an ID on spiders. You might want to offer this one up for ID.
I thought looked like a male Southern house spider. They look very simular though.

I'm thinking it is more like a Wandering Spider.
If you look at the coloration and body morphology, it more closely resembles... in fact, it STRONGLY resembles... a Titiotus costa:
