The Martin and Willie Handcart companies left too late in the year make it to Salt Lake before Winter set in and were caught in early snows in Wyoming. Salt Lake found out they were coming and sent out rescue party's the first of October anticipating they would be in trouble. Our youth from Lincoln, NE went to the Martin's Cove where the Martin Company stalled and waited for the rescue. My wife and I got to be the parents for a group of seven kids that pulled Hand Carts to the different sits and crossed Sweetwater River four time. My 6th great grandmother was with the Martin Company with her 12 year old daughter. She died four days before Martins Cove and her daughter was left an orphan. The son had migrated to Salt Lake three years before and was with the rescue party and was able to save his sister. I wanted to take lots of pictures but pushing and pulling the cart I was too pooped take many. We were 15yrs older than anyone else.
