I have a friend that was relating a story to me last week.
A little preface. As a kid growing up, he got into drugs and had trouble kicking them. (meth) He wound up having legal issues and did 2 stints in state prison. He got out in 2005 and gave up drugs. He has really made his way. He has worked steadily since and he is a great guy. He reconnected with his youngest daughter that is 23 years old. His ex-wife (divorced in 2000) is still dabbling in drugs and he has nothing to do with her. Same with his oldest daughter as she is into drugs also.
His youngest daughter (single) had joined one of those groups that team togather and build 8 houses for the eight people involved. He offered to help her so for the last 6 mos or so, all of his spare time has been devoted to that project. Like I said, he is a great guy
So last week, he was in his insurance office to update his insurance needs and the agent says to him, "Oh I see you have a couple of policies with us." He was unaware and asked him about it.
Apparently, his ex-wife took out a policy on him ,as did his estranged daughter. This was 3 years after they were divorced and when he was going back to prison. Two policies at $50,000 each. And they have been paying on them since. Unbelievable.
He confronted his ex about it and was hit with the usual tirade of expletives that you would expect. He confronted her agent (seller) and he was stumbling over his tongue
and finally gave him his lawyers name.
And finally I ask you. Is this against the law?
Does my friend have any recourse.

I'm not a lawyer, but I don't believe you can own a policy on someone else's life.

Just imagine, how much life insurance would be in force on our mr. president's life!!!!

Apparently not. Same thing happened when I was not quite divorced but in the process. I had to take a mild physical for the insurance company.
I wouldn't worry about it as it won't cost him anything.
I believe you can take a policy out on anyone as long as YOU pay the premium.
Of course this was about 30'years ago so I'm not exactly sure if it's still legal but it probably is.
It is a little unnerving when it first happens but I didn't give it a second thought a few days later.

If you are right it will probably turn out ok as he will probably outlive them both. The only thing, I would be suspicious of strangers approaching me. Some people will murder for less.

The answer may differ state to state, but ordinarily the principle as that you can't buy life insurance on another person's life unless you have an insurable interest. A spouse or child ordinarily would have an insurable interest.

Domestic relations law may alter this, but even divorce ordinarily would not mean there was no insurable interest.

Your friend needs to consult a lawyer in his jurisdiction, especially if he is concerned about ulterior motives.

Why in the world would you ask this on a photo forum?

I was going to add, tongue-in-cheek, that he should, "watch his back," but I didn't want to make light of the situation.
There's probably some clause about murder, but his ex & eldest would probably be fingered immediately.

First of all, this
is the Chit Chat section,(not photography related items)
Secondly I was looking for some insight which would not be considered gossiping in my home town area.
And lastly, I thought I might glean a little knowledge from the obviously superior intellectual and experienced people on this sight.
How's that?

Obviously, I am trying to be incognito in my area. I'm not sure my friend would appreciate me nosing around.
Believe me I am not trying to offend anyone's sensitivity.
touchy, touchy, touchy.
And on top of that, I thought some of you might be interested in how screwed up some people are.

I guess that's find if you didn't want an answer from someone who actually would know the answer.

I hope you understand, I was referring to those of us on the Hog as the people with which you share a common interest.

I think it is completely appropriate to pose such questions 😊

Although it never fails to amaze me the things some people will do

Absolutely! I found the question more interesting than a lot of the other posts in Chit-Chat. :D
