Just received it, I have not used the D7100 camera body yet. I already have: Sigma 70-300mm, F4-5,6DG OS, Nikon 55-200, Nikon35mm 1:1.8G, Nikon Kit 18-55mm 1:3.5G. Thought I would take my time and make sure this is up to snuff before I take the 4th of July shots for my fire department.

Charge the battery. You might also get a second battery.

Many places on the Net to look at setting the camera up and to familiarize yourself with it. Learn all functions. I am a Canon guy and did this with my 6D and was well pleased. make it your second skin. Learn to be fast and then slow down.

Good luck, it's a great body.

Are you going to be shooting in the RAW file format and processing later or using .jpeg files from the camera? Here's a tip if you're going to be using the .jpeg files from the camera. Nikon sets the default sharpening for the picture controls very low at level 3. Nikon expert, Ken Rockwell, recommends to increase the sharpening to level 6. Go through all of the picture controls - standard, neutral, vivid, monochrome, etc. and increase the sharpening. Level 9 is the highest but that can be too much.

I find the best way to learn about my cameras is to download the user's manual from the Nikon website. I'd much rather read the manual on my computer than the little book included with the camera.

I used his video to get up and running quickly.....http://www.michaelthemaven.com/?postID=2787&nikon-d7100-training-tutorial-video-manual-download. You can buy the download immediately and get the dvd later in the mail. Why don't you try some auto shots and see how they look.

I would agree on the sharpening settings as well. I like shooting in Auto 2 and Cloudy WB.

David Busch has some excellent books out that are instructional for the D7100. Invest the $25 or less and you will be able to navigate your D7100 easily.

There must be something wrong with me because I actually understand this.

I wouldn't follow what Rockwell does . As you will have over everything over the top especially vivid . And you will have cartoons same as his .
