My grandson came running into the computer room the other day and said he needed a camera because there was a really colorful lizard in the back yard. I told him to look on the kitchen counter and went back to some PP work. I thought he would grab the point and shoot I keep out there but when he came back in, he had the SX50 that my wife had left there. I asked him if he had ever used it before and he said he had not but it looked pretty easy. The enclosed picture proves that nine year olds these days are a lot more technical than in my childhood!

That's a really cool photo. It would be nice if it was framed and held on to as a keepsake or hung on a wall.

I'm not sure if the experience of your grandson can be generalized and applied to all nine year olds.

You can teach exposure and comp and the camera helf focus, but the eye, for a good subject is inate. Get him shooting with something bulletproof and encourge him all the way.

I'll bet he'll think masks and layers are easy, too! And his hand is probably stedy and agile on the mouse. You found an assistant!

Blow it up. Hang it on the wall. Have him sign it. More than technical, he may learn to love it. Great beginning!

Children are the best because they think without filters. They aren't afraid to break anything and they don't know the rules so they make their own. They see the world for what it is and not what we try to make it. Encourage him and at the same time let him find his own way, but all the while watch and learn as he'll teach you something amazing!

To see through a child's eyes is to see the world anew! S-

Many thanks to all who took the time to reply so favorably to my post on my grandson and his picture of the lizard. I will let him read all of your posts the next time he comes over and I will have an enlargement on canvas made for his room at home.

Thats a really great shot, I think you have the makings of a shooter. Ease him in and he'll love it, always let him shoot what he wants and he will have fun and success all at the same time.
