I am an amateur photographer and do light photo editing. I have used Picasa and PSE 11. I am trying to decide if I should step up to Lightroom 6 or purchase an upgrade to PSE 13. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. This forum has helped me in the past with great information.

John,
I'm prejudiced toward PS. I currently use PS CS6. I also consider myself a very light user of LR. The ability of PSE, which is similar to PS, to use layers is quite a powerful tool in editing. I can see works of people who are very skilful with LR and they can do almost anything I can in PS. So, it's a toss up in that respect. I personally like the idea of working on layers.

If you are using the layers functions of PSE, your best bet is stay with PSE.

PSE will do a very nice job for you.

Upgrading to PSE 13 may not give you much benefit for light photo editing.
PSE 11 can most likely take care of all your layer needs.

I believe Lightroom would be helpful if you needed to edit many photos rather quickly ... with the use of presets and synchronize settings.

Try lr for a month...no harm no foul, unless you like it. Then you'll either need to buy it or go with the cloud version.

I don't think I would be happy without the benefits of layers and masks.

When I shoot and I am under deadline, I don't have time for anything other than LR..Don't like LR6, it crashes too much love the 5.6 64-bit version.. solid..

PS/LR package from Adobe for 9.99usd a month is a steal IMO..

I've probably only edited a 1000 or so photos on LR6, without any issues. Are others having issues too? I'm just wondering if I should be watching out for something.

In your situation I would cave in to the Cloud offer. You need Lightroom but buying it new costs a year and a half of subscription...at which time there will be at least a PSE update. With the cloud you get forever updated Photoshop as well.

Althought I don't use Lightroom, I find that PS Elements 13 does all I need and even more.

Frequently those who primarily use LR go back to PS or PSE to finish, because they have features, layers for one, that LR does not.

Only if there are effects that need to go into a photo..
For print, you really only need to use LR.. Plus if you are going through a few hundred photos.. LR is the way to do it.. Saves TONS of time.. Gets the simple edits (lighting, cropping, ect..) done quickly

For artistic expression PS is an awesome tool..

I couldn't be without both..

I feel that the issue with LR6 is on my computers end, somewhere there is a conflict.. LF5.6 64bit does not have any issue on my system..

I do all my photo editing on an Alienware laptop that at the time I bought it was blown out to the max.. But it is now 5yrs old and some drivers are dated to the hardware available back then..

Otherwise, it is still a beast in PS and various audio editing programs I use.. like protools
