These are really for everyone, but especially for Paul. They were shot this afternoon with my SX50 from very far away. The chicks are really small and blend into the surroundings. I believe that mom has another egg in the nest.

I plan to try to go back out later to get some decent shots.

Pray for rain in South Jersey this week. I have NOT forgotten your chicks - just been too busy shooting new ones to go slogging through "old" images. Rain will keep me inside working on organizing my photos.

After you click on download click one more time which again enlarges the image, and you can move the enlargement around by using the sliders, to view close up things like feather patterns. I probably should have said double click.

Thanks for the explanation. I thought it might have been something like that and tried it on my iPad. It only lets me do a single click, though - unless I'm missing something.

Looks like LEAST TERNS. We have several colonies around the Bay Area / San Francisco Region right now with chicks also.

Yes, they are least terns. Found that out after my OP. Personally, I'd call them fiercest terns. I went back out again this evening and needed to be dressed like a member of a SWAT team. Blasted things dive bombed the living c**p out of me. Did manage to get some better shots than I did yesterday. That wasn't hard to do considering the low quality of yesterday's images!

Beautiful, Mike! Hope you get the last one, too, when it's hatched!

Not sure if you know why they are bombing you. But here in California they are a protected species and you can be fined for getting too close. They are protecting their young. Please give them their space to breed and do not disturb them.

I do know why they are dive bombing me (as well as anyone walking onto or off the beach). They are breeding and protecting their nests. Here they are also a protected species, which is why large areas of the beach are actually roped off and posted. FYI, the terns were also dive bombing the state agent standing right next to me. We certainly do give them their space.

I suggest that you read my entire original post. You will note that I stated I was very far away. There were 2 reasons for that:
1. I have respect for wildlife and the habitat
2. The area where they nest is roped off with regular patrols to make certain that those who do not know any better do not disturb their nesting area.

Thanks, Sue. I was in the area again last night and still just the 2 chicks. The area is so far up onto the area that is roped off and posted that I cannot be sure if she is sitting on another egg or simply settling in near her chicks. These birds are rather small and the chicks are almost invisible. For the most part, their "nests" are well away from the ropes.
