Thanks for your comments especially with regard to lighting. The style of photography I favor requires lots of available sunlight to work with. I don't have any direct knowledge of your specific questions but a quick Google Search such as "canon sx50 low light performance" and "canon SX50 birds in flight performance" just might provide the answers you're after.
