Had the same problem and even though I have pockets lost a many of lens caps. Found a really ingenious item at the local camera shop (now out of business). It is a lanyard that goes around the lens barrel with a heavy duty string that attaches to the outside of the lens cap with glue. lens cap comes off, dangles out of way. Haven't lost a cap since.

Lens cap on, lens hood off, until I'm ready to take the picture. We all have our preferences.

All my pinch type Nikon lens caps are a pain in the but to put on with a lens hood in place. This is true for most of the other brand lenses I have owned.

The only exception was a couple of Sigma lens cap. They had a back taper on the pinch surface that resulted in a positive grip.

You would think as complex as cameras and lenses are today the manufactures would be able to make a decent cap.

Perhaps they should consult with Sigma.

You can get a magnetic thing. It is primarily for filters but once you have the base one can be a lens cap. Jerry has the name and link.

I like the idea but am so far too frugal to go that way.

Easy fix. Lens hood reversed lens cap on in the bag. When I take the camera out cap comes off and put in the bag lens hood gets plecad properly on the lens. Doing it that way since the 70's.

That's how I fly. That and the fact that I don't beat up my equipment.

I have been using and happy with this cap holder that attaches to your camera strap. Available from our friends at B&H.

I agree, leave it off. I have Protector or UV filters on all my lenses as well as lens hoods and I find that is all I need. I leave the lens hood an all the time and that will protect from accidental bumps and if by chance something would touch the front element the filter will take the hit. I've never had and incident in 60 years. The front lens caps are just a pain in the aspidistra.

Usually when I'm shooting I leave the lens cap off until ready to put the camera away. I have a hood and filter on just about all my lenses.

Sometimes I take the hood off as well to utilize the built in flash with certain lenses. I like to travel light therefore seldom carry a bag.

I don't have a problem with caps falling off or loss. It just annoys me with prices charged for cameras they over look small details.

How much effort does it take to make a decent lens cap. The tooling may be more complex but I doubt it would add more than a few pennies to the total camera cost.

Which I responded to. Then another post was added about what to do with lens caps when not protecting the lens. I responded to that post also.

Is there a problem?

The pocket is a great and creative idea. But if your pocketsare like mine, you risk gettting pocket dust mites into your lens. Well not really in but on.

Of course, it may not work too well if you are into nude photography, but I have found it works well for most other things...

Or, here's another approach!
- Can't comment on this one, but women's clothes often lack pockets. After losing a lens cap the first day I used my new camera, I ordered a lens cap keeper, that thing with a cord that attaches to the lens cap and the camera strap. Not a lost lens cap since I attached it. (I know some of the UHHers don't like them, but for me it's a godsend.)

What a stunning idea! I would never have thought of such a novel solution. I'll try to remember it for my next trip to Machu Picchu.

I guess that depends on the individual approach!

Remember nerds and pocket protectors or "Boy cooties! EEEEWW!"

I tend to think of it more like a personal hygiene and personal organizational issue.

We all need to choose our own approach, there is no universal solution that fits every body or everybody!

We have a friend who is there right now! When she gets back I'll ask her what she did!
