I've just purchased a Nielson Bainbridge mat cutter which didn't come with directions. I thought I could figure out how to use it. Boy was I wrong. It doesn't make sense to me at all. My hope is that someone in the Forum will be familiar with it and help me out.

I'm not familiar with this cutter, but here is the URL to their home page. Perhaps you can contact them for the instructions.

The difficulty you may have is that this is an older model cutter (around the 20 year range I believe) so you may run into some difficulty tracking down a manual. If you continue to get no response from N-B, you could try contacting the people at pictureframingequipment.com and see if they have or can steer you to an old manual saved in some file cabinet, or possibly give you a contact phone number that will get you to somebody at N-B.

Just to start you out a bit, your pictures show this cutter has two adjustable production stops (at either end of the guide bar, and a double cutting head (one side for straight cuts and one side for bevel cuts). This is a standard setup for most mid-range and pro cutters. You might try looking at some of the online video tutorials posted by Logan Mat Cutters on their sight. Although many of the details will not apply (changing blades, where to read or set guide marks, etc.) you may be able to gleen a good deal about the general operation of your cutter, and from there figure out some of your particular specifics.

Jim,

What a gem of a link you provided, a person, David, replied with a link to a cutter that is very similar to the one I have. I've been able to square it and order blades. I learned how to set one of the production stops, the other one is more complex and I'm working on it. I really thought I had wasted money on this purchase, but now I believe I will be able to use it.

Thank you so very much for your help.

Regards,
Linda

This looks like a sturdy pro cutter so you definitiely didn't wast your money. You should pay for it in 5-6 framings. Although I'm not really good at it, cutting mats isn't even small aircraft science, so off to you tube and play along a few time just with scrap board to learn on. You've got all the stability you need. I've unearthed my Logan and it's a toy by comaprison.

Good luck and intact fingers to be sure!

I purchased the cutter on ebay a couple of days ago after much research. It looked simple to use but I couldn't get anything to line up. I was hesitant about unscrewing and moving things around without a manual. I didn't know how to loosen the blade as there were four screws in the head alone. The link to the manual of a like cutter really helped tremendously. I have it squared and everything lines up correctly. I ordered blades, as these are rusted. I bought mats and frames as I'm in an eight person show in February and it's a body of work and matting and framing would have cost a small fortune. Thus the purchase. I am watching videos on You Tube which are really helpfull.

Thank you for your help, it's greatly appreciated.

This is for a different mat cutter, but the method is pretty generic:
