Whales are bubblejetting up there at this time of year. A small whale watch boat trip is the only way to go. We were there last July and got the most amazing shots! Used a zoom 80-400 with a monopod. Once the whale was so close to the boat, that 80mm was too long! He filled the frame!!
Mendenhall is nice but can't compare to bubblejetting whales IMHO.

The blue and white buses are right near the dock. It's 13 miles to Mendenhall, so getting on and off and riding is probably a half hour. You can't go out on white and back on blue, but otherwise they do the exact same thing. Here is some good Juneau info:
