Hi I was looking at another thread asking about a cheap printer for producing an album and really printing at home is not cheap and besides even having produced the photo's you still need to get from there to your album.

I've just been looking at photo books on snapfish (.ie) which is part of HP and they seem to be reasonable in price. You can compose your book online or they have software that you can download to produce your book offline. So far for a 26 page book it looks to be less than $60 with a maximum of around 126 pages.

I've not done this before and I have no idea of the quality of the end result but it seems quite appealing. I guess it might be worth investing in a calibration tool for your monitor so your images come out as you expect and not too dark.

compared with buying your own printer supplying it with ink calibrating the ink paper combination buying the ink, buying the paper getting it to print where you want it on the page... It seems a good alternative to home printing.

So has anyone taken the plunge, and had a photobook made were you pleased with the results and which company did you go with and of course how much did it cost?

You might consider Costco on line photo services. I have made several photo books using them and have always been very satisfied. Their price is lower than most other services and shipping is free if you have it sent to your local Costco warehouse for pickup.

I've designed and printed 4 wedding books with Blurb - all excellent quality with linen hard covers and book jackets. I have done one with Shutterfly - pretty good but I like Blurb better.

I post process in LR so Blurb having a direct link in the Book module for LR is very convenient. I have made several books including large Landscape. The books were 236 pages in length. Maximum allowed is 240 pages. I used the templates provided in the LR book module. Some had one image per page, others several images per page. Many different templates. You can do your PPing and then drop into the Book module. I used their logo on the beginning and end page of the books to save $20. It's very unobtrusive. They have a 35% off discount ending today (June 29th) at midnight. The only caveat I have is to be very careful and triple check before you send off to Blurb AND then check when it gets to Blurb to make sure it downloaded correctly with proper margins and captions if you have used any. You cannot correct in Blurb but have to completely redownload the book from LR to Blurb if you found an error in the Blurb download. My Publisher will let you compose a 100 page book at the most BUT the lay-flat feature is awesome. The quality of the super gloss paper is excellent. BTW, I would use the pro paper in Blurb.

But Costco, which sends photo books out to a 3rd party, uses lower quality and thinner pages than Shutterfly and the other providers mentioned in this thread.

I love the ones from Adoramapix.

They have made them less expensive lately. My first one was free + shipping then I was hooked.

If you are wanting to include a lot of text such as family history, I suggest you give Bookemon a try. It's very versatile and lets you create your own pages just the way you want them with inserting as many photos as you like. It also has the themed templates as other offer if you like to use those. For a book of mainly photos, My Publisher has excellent quality. I found their program a little hard to use without the templates so I created my pages in Photoshop and inserted the entire page as one large photo full bleed. That worked well and I still have a copy of all my pages if I should ever want to print again with another company.

I have made several travel photobooks with My Publisher. You download the software and prepare your book on your computer, then upload the finished project. I like that better than preparing the book online. I like to start with many more photos than I'll probably use so I can vary the page layout as I go, and doing the work on a downloaded program saves uploading photos that I'm not going to use.

I have used snapfish and has been great. My kids gave us a 50th wedding gift of a book of pictures and they said how easy it was to put togeather.

Have you done any since iPhoto was replaced with Photos? If so, is the quality the same? With the changes in options, I wondered if they had begun to use a different print service for their books.

In simple answer I have not. But I believed the Aperture software was better than iPhoto. I think the printing is the same. Question is whether or not the Photos software is as good. I am not a fan of Photos so will not go there.

Again, Shutterfly bought out MyPublisher a couple of years ago -- see http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20130430005541/en/Shutterfly-Acquires-MyPublisher#.VZKeYvlViko.

MyPublisher continues to operate as it's own entity. We continue to get their email offers almost weekly. I emailed them yesterday just to ask if their books and shutterfly books are identical. No response yet.
