An eagle got them both. The bird people said baby season is over, and the bonded pair will not mate again until next year.
Very sad...nature is beautiful and cruel. But always interesting.

Sad. I recall many years ago when I was in college my Biology department was allowed to visit a wildlife sanctuary maintained by the Nature Conservancy. They had a video camera set up on a Redtailed Hawk nest. We got a few opportunities to see the eggs hatch (not the day I was there though), and baby birds. Unfortunately a huge Barn Owl attacked the nest one night, destroying the hatchlings and I believe killing one of the parents as well. I guess hawks to owls is like coyotes to wolves.

Nature at work. Not much more to say than that.

Last year I was taking photo's of Great Blue Heron babies, many nests close, really great for photographers. Then the Wood Storks came in at the end of the Blue Heron season, any baby Blue Heron not able to flee or fly by that time were eliminated by the Wood Storks that took over the Blue Heron nests. As they say, only the strong and quick survive.

That is sad. I've been going out a couple of times a week to check on the nest I've been following and I'll be going out again this AM. Hopefully, all 3 chicks will still be OK. One of the bigger chicks keeps picking on the "runt" (last to hatch) and I fear for his/her survival. But nature will be nature.

If all goes as planned, I will be posting an update on week 3 for them.

Sad indeed. But good ness for the fish.

We lost a nest on a power pole due to wind caused fire. One of ghe Osprey sat on the bare pole the next day. I don't know if therr wete chicks or eggs.

But kudos to Idaho power. In addition to fixing the burnt pole and adding insulators they installed a new hihger bare pole with a nest platform. They had to shut down power to our valley and seversl towns for a day to do it. We are hopeful for next May.

I've been watching several pairs of nesting Green Heron that incubate their eggs for 19-21 days and several days after the eggs hatch a predator takes the chicks. I don't know what predator takes them, but they are there one day and gone the next. Nature is cruel.

I wonder if you are talking about the Ospreys in the Bellaire, MI area. We have had ospreys every year but this year they were here and now seem to be gone. I thought it just might have been a bad year for them but maybe the babies became eagle prey....
