looks as though you obeyed all the rules and got the results to prove it. nice color, detail. What was your lens?

my first thought is that using the 70 and a 2x converter you are leaving a couple f/stops on the table.
Why do you prefer that over a naked 100mm or 150mm?

Well both together cost a lot less than a 100mm or 150mm lens. The Sigma was $450 new. The Kenko was $142. At less than $600 I think its a real bargain for the IQ. At true macro I shoot stopped down so I don't miss the f/stops. If I'm shooting for a shallow DoF at less than 1:1, I will lose the TC.
Also, the set up gives me 2:1 capability (which this shot was taken at ) or doubles my short working distance of the 70mm or anything in between.

Very nice shots. These little guys are not that easy to photograph. They're skittish as hell and could - if the right scotch was available - drive a man to drink. :)

certainly can't argue with the results and now that i'm switching from crop to full frame will probably have to start using a converter on the 105mm myself.

Thanks! That's why I like the cool light rainy days we've had last Saturday and this one too. It slows them down. ;) In fact its kind of weird weather for the end of June. 66 degrees out right now! Bob

I did some research on TCs and macro. Saw some great results with one guy using a Kenko. The fact it only cost $142, I figured no great loss if it didn't perform-but it does!

Really nice shot. Lighting is really good for these shiny flies. I took 38 shots at one yesterday. They have really quick reflexes. I ended up with 25 shots of an empty leaf! What model Kenco 2X are you using. They have many models available & some suppliers have new old stock. It gets confusing. Thanks.

Very nice result, I am learning to use the Kenco tubes but finding getting so close is scaring the insects. I think I need to get an extension for my flashlight as per the one Douglass suggests. I tried to use flash off camera but I only have two arms and I would need at least three.

Thanks! I had chilly weather (slows em down) on my side and still only got one shot at a time and a couple empty frames too. I bought the "top of the line" which only cost $142! Best $142 I have spent on photographic equipment, I'd say. Teleplus Pro 300 DGX 2x for Nikon mount.

Thank you! Nice thing about a TC is that it will double the magnification at the same working distance OR double the working distance at the same magnification. (or anything inbetween)
