Blue Flag - Iris versicolor - today, from the Iris family. This is the familiar native Iris in the eastern US, often seen along roadsides and in marshy areas. (100mm lens, f/16, 100 ISO, 1/100th sec, off-camera diffused flash.)

There is a story that goes with blue flag. In the 1600s the French open the far north beaver fur trade. When a voyager fell dead, his fellow bois planted a blue flag at his burial place. This was to mark where he could be found and to honor him. So as you traverse the northern woods west and north of Grand Portage near the Pidgeon River High Falls you might occasionaly see a blue flag - this is the time to remove your hat and be still for a monent.
