Nice essay/article and many evocative photos about a major river and the people who live near it.

Thanks for the post.

I've crossed the Ogeechee many times on my to or from the Savannah area. The Altamaha River is another major river in the same general area with many lovely areas; here in the Atlanta area we have the Chattahoochee River which runs through the city. The river "hosts" sort of a strip park, long and narrow, which gives access to the waters for fishing - trout fishing in Atlanta! - canoeing and rafting, and nature study. Here's a link to one of the portions of the park. http://chattnaturecenter.org/

Years ago I saw a wonderful coffee table book about a trip down the Mississippi.

A friend of mine paddled a canoe down the Yukon river, but he was drunk much of the time, almost drowned, almost froze, and never took photos or wrote about his amazing trip.

My friend on the Yukon capsized his canoe. He was drunk at the time. He hadn't bothered securing his gear to the canoe so my friend and canoe made it to shore but his rifle, food, and all else sank to the bottom and was gone. The water was cold and so was the weather, but not yet into the "real" winter. My friend was/is a heavy smoker, which saved his life. Because he always had a light. He was able to start a fire with his disposable lighter, warm up, dry out. He then walked along the Yukon until obtaining succor at the first Indian village he came to...

Wowzer! Sounds like a short story, "To Build a Fire" or something, maybe by Jack London. He was really lucky!

He was very lucky and had many close calls. I wish he was a writer because his stories could fill many books.
