Just got the update for I-Photo and went into shock when my pictures were spread all over and I couldn't find the categories(folders & albums). To make a long story short, I called Apple and got some great help and it's free because I-Photo is now called PHOTO and it is new. The icon is a color wheel.
After tech support calmed me down, I realized it is much better than I-Photo. What got me really going was I just had figured out how to get around some of I-Photos inequities. I realize it is still a basic PP tool, but I like what I see. I have only made a few attempts with Lightroom5 program because it thicks me off every time I read the chapter on cataloging. I just feel they go all around the mountain to take p_e. Curious to know if anyone else is using Mac's PHOTO and what they think of it.

Because it is there and it is free, I use it but minimally. I
have my old photos in it, the ones I had in iPhoto before I started shooting raw and really needing Lightroom, and anything I take with my cellphone. I don't care for it. It seems a little better than iPhoto for processing images but worse for cataloguing. Its cataloguing system seems totally nonsensical to me. It is impossible to use it for a base from which to export/reimport back and forth to other applications and plugins the way I did with iPhoto. I had always got my photo books via iPhoto but will have to find another vendor as the options are severely limited now and my favorites are gone. For me both Photos and iPhoto are terrible for use with raw images.
I use Lightroom for my main catalog and editing, with finishing done in Photoshop and all my PS images coming back to roost in LR when done, that way I can find everything easily. Once you get the catalog basics figured out, LR is pretty intuitive, but it does pay off to understand its cataloging idiosyncrasies first.
Photos might work out fine for the photographer who shoots only jpegs, does light editing with no need for other programs, if they can figure out how to manage the way it organizes things.

Photos is wonderful for organizing and viewing, maybe rudimentary for editing.
It will "search" on title, location, or keyword for instant display of old photos. It also can create "smart albums" based on multiple criteria, and best for me, it "nests" folders for albums, allowing much better functionality for viewing on iPad or iPhone. For instance, I have a folder for "Trips", "places", "holidays", etc.
I import all pictures into Aperture (or the old iPhoto, which is still on your computer) for catalogues get, batch editing of title, location, etc, and the re-export them back to Photos.
Like you, I was very upset when I first saw the change, but now find it fantastic for what it does.
Thanks for the input. I was told by Apple to store all photos in albums.
unlike before you cannot delete accidentally(like my trigger finger does).
You need to press control and click and then delete i a dialogue box. I haven't got far enough into it to explore what you mentioned. Your input is well appreciated.
I agree Linckinn. The new changes I think are great. So I am looking at it as 101 to other PP programs. Once I get my photos organized I will take a serious look at my LR5. Thanks for the input.
Photos was the replacement for iPhoto (not a replacement for Aperture) and many people did not like it because it was different. But it's a decent program of itself and it has some nice features. If your interested in learning more "Photo Apps Expert" (use your search tool to find it) is a good web site resource for information and training (free and paid) on Apple's Photos program.
