Was wondering if I could have done better on these. Found the best spot I could but not able to find much clean background. Shot in RAW, did a bit of exposure adjustment, clarity, and sharpening in post, plus cropping. D7000, 18-200mm, hand held. Most all shots at or near 200mm.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, I am far from being an expert, but your second and third shots are, I think the better of the series. Your first photo has the horse in an awkward position, as well as the rider. I don't know what you were aiming for as far as a "clean background" in places like this but I really like the background in #2 the best with the fellas on the rails watching. All in all, I think you did a fine job with hand holding and shooting at 200mm. Keep up the good work.

Forgot to mention I had VR on but was braced pretty well on a fence railing. Should I have turned VR off?

You were shooting in burst mode, right. Just wondering.

Nope, just anticipating the action and hoping I hit some good ones. The website for a pro that was there said he had 4000 over the two days. I'm a bit more reserved in my efforts. Had about 270 for the day we were there. Lots of culls in my initial review but enough keepers to keep me busy with PP for a while.

I went out to the Spray Rodeo a number of years ago and the Tygh Valley Rodeo. Tygh Valley had the best arrangement for shooting from, spray kept you to the side only, to big an arena. Those were film days and while the 70-300 worked well at Tygh Valley , it wasn't long enough at Spray. Now I do digital and I wouldn't anticipate any shot. The chute opens and I'd be shooting in burst mode. One thing I found about burst mode is to slow down the number of shot's a sec and the camera get's better time to focus in between, lot less fuzzy shots. I hear a lot of people tell me that I really should plan ahead and pre-focus where the animal is going, how in the world they do that without a set up is beyond me! That one photo where someone said the horse was in a bad position I agree with but if you'd had that on burst mode, it could have come out a lot better by simply getting the shot with the horse in a different position.

I really like the expression you captured on the bull rider in the second pic.

I believe you can set your camera of a burst of four shots. I have found it's quite useful when doing sporting events. It will give you quite a range of coverage to chose from when making your selection. It's real easy to delete those you wish to dump and allows you to take full advantage of the Gigs you purchased on the SD Card. I think you are missing out some by not using the burst. But it's your choice and your camera, you use it the way your most comfortable. And please understand, I am not trying to shine a bad light your photo's.

How many shots would you use in burst mode? Slowing the sequence down sounds good too. There was a pro down in from of me at the inner fence. I wish I had asked him about shutter speed, ISO, and F stop. It was plenty bright so shutter speed was no problem. I was debating whether to use a shallow DOF to blur the background but then I might not get all of rider and animal sharp. I was about 150' away with the zoom at 200mm.

The pictures are great. The first rider looks a bit like Burt Reynolds.

I slowed mine down to 4 per sec. Set the Iso so I can get min f8 at a min 1/640.

I enjoyed these shots, gvarner! In the downloads you can see so much more, like expressions on people's faces and even the animals faces! Good job, gvarner!

Here is a dirty trick to slow your camera down, I haven't used it, but my daughter did it unintentionally along with a few folks on this site. Use a standard SD Card, one that is straight off the shelf without the high transfer speed, this will slow down the processing time by slowing down the transfer rate to the card.
