I was once asked to shoot a wedding for $25, and just hand over the film! This request came the day before the event! Unfortunately for the couple I was busy. I was watching my car rust!

I enjoy reading this kind of thread. I am an amateur, really amateur, photographer. However, I am professionally a programmer. It's amazing listening to people tell me how easy it is to write code. It is easy to write code. Just like it is easy to take pictures. You get what you pay for.

First marriage SO and I went with a pro-photographer. The pics were great and we were very pleased. Money well spent. I don't get to recommend photographers often; but, when I have I always say get a professional... oh, and research them.

(Separate question.)

Nelson, I was wondering what you and possibly others feel like everytime you see another program on the market that does similar end result work as what you do?

So,
Nelson,

-Started professionally 1976
-Programming since 1973
-Couple degrees
-tons of side classes plus I teach
-my resume is 22 pages long and not one person complains
-CICS/DB2 for 25 years,
-Assembler and Cobol programmer
-now MQ, MFT.MQAMS,Message Broker (aka IIB) - Middleware person
-About to embark on Watson
-JAVA/C/PERL/various scripting languages
-World wide technical consultant/management

So, this all leads up to this, now I ask..................you don't think programming is easy? LOL I do, but........................................

Actually it did come easy, but I would change your statement. You DEF have to be a certain type of mind-set.

You can ask for whatever you want. That does not mean you will get it. The Axiom "you get what you pay for" is very true also in wedding photography.

I learn from it. I don't, per se, have to have the source. I just figure out what it does that might be better than what I have.

So, br Nelson, br br -Started professionally 1976... (show quote)

Have I mentioned I hate you! 8-)

My resume is only 5 pages long. Having a "certain type of mind-set" is true for both photography AND programming. Programming is easy... programming robust, maintainable, well thought out code is not. Photography is easy... photographing a good, story telling, flattering, well composed, awesome looking picture is not. Both take a butt-load (a butt load is 63 gallons BTW) of learning, practice, refinement, practice, thinking, practice, study, practice, and effort.

Your preaching to the choir. Yeah, I learn from the best and the hard way (Like read through multiple 4-5 foot high system core dumps looking for that elusive out of memory condition caused by a program that did not respect address boundaries or running around like an idiot, doing the try, try again thing, to get the correct picture. Yes, you are 101% correct. Although I will correct you on one point, it 62.147. LOL

I have stopped using Thumbtack because people are looking for the cheapest price, not the best photographer.

I am not a Pro Photographer. I do it out of pleasure. I've done 2 weddings. The first was for a friend who said he couldn't afford a Pro... asked me to take the pictures. He provided the film (slide). I set up a slide projector for the family/friends. They loved my work, etc, etc. 2 monthes later I heard that I "screwed them over" because they took the slides to a cheap shop to be printed. They wanted custom printing and it was going to cost money. I told them you paid for what you got.... my time at no cost. I will not even consider doing weddings for a friend as a favor. Second wedding I did was not as a photographer. My wife and I were asked as guests. Got there, just throw away cameras on the tables. I went out to car and got my camera. Took lots of photos. Spent hours post processing the photos. The wedding was actually 2.... mother and daughter. I made up 2 books (8x10's) and gave them to the family. Made it look like 2 different weddings. They cried when they looked at them. Tried to pay me for my work. I told them it (they) were my wedding presents to the family. They were poor folks and I knew it. While at a Bluegrass show the mother walked up to me and handed me an envelope. In it was $50. I tried to give it back saying that there was no charge....wedding present. Mother said that my work made their day. Their family wanted to know how they could have afforded a Pro Photographer. That made my day.

But, I just don't do weddings.

Always good to see someone elses take on how to do the same or similar tasks, take inspiration from the good bits, and improve on them. :)
