Has anyone used this lens? I currently use Nikon 24mm 2.8, 35mm 1.8G DX, 50mm 1.8D, 85mm 1.8G and the 300mm f4 D most of the time. I have moved to primarily using prime lenses for their sharpness and low light capability. I have the 18-300 3.5-5.6 DX but find it soft in too many shots. I have a Nikon d7100 and am considering this lens, but want to hear from others about its sharpness and any other consideration I should know about buying one. Thanks in advance for your insights
I have it - it was one of the first lenses I bought for my D7000 and am using it now with my new D7200. I love it and use it more than any of my other lenses. It does not have VR, but I mostly use it for my son's sports (at night) and at a relatively high shutter speed so no VR is not an issue most of the time.
A great lens. Part of Nikons original Holy Trio
Yes, I have it in use on a 750. Just could not justify the bucks for the 70-200. Very satisfied.

Attached is a review of the new 70-200mm f2.8 VRII by Thom Hogan in which he also discussed the previous versions of the 80-200mm and 70-200mm. Yours is listed and discussed. Hogan also indicated that the sharpest of the previous lenses is the AF-S 80-200mm f2.8.

I bought mine about 15-20 (?) years ago. Came with lens hood and black hard leather case.
I now use it on a d300s and a d7100.
I got a 70-300 VR about a year ago but still prefer the 80-200.
Wonderful for portraits, not that I do these often nowadays. Great focus and out of focus backgrounds.
It's a relatively heavy lens but seems to still balance well on both my cameras.
Just be aware I don't think they are compatible with any Nikon teleconverters.
There are several versions of this lens.

I have one very similar, just no AF. I love it. Very sharp and great in low light levels.

On a crop body one of the sharpest of Nikons zooms. You won't be disappointed.
I used one until I bought my 70-200. I was never disappointed with it, and doubt that you will be.

Here's a few from the non-AF version I use.

I'm confused. I had never heard of the 80-200 before.
It seems like the 70-200 and the 80-200 are the same price.
Is the 70-200 for full frame and the 80-200 for crop sensor cameras?
I've been planning on getting the 70-200.
I've been looking at the Tamron version.

Both are FX lenses.
The 80-200 is an older design.

So would they work ok on a 7100?
I'm going to get a 750 sometime soon, but right now
I would like to boost the lens collection.
Thanks for responding.

Yep, but the 80-200 will focus slower.
Focus speed and VR were the main reasons I got the newer 70-200. I couldn't see any difference in sharpness, other than what the VR helped with.
KEH has several used ones listed
HERE.

Ok, so the 70-200 should work on crop and full frame better and it's almost the same price.
Thanks very much. I really appreciate it.
I here the Tamron 70-200 is really good also.
