I am slowly going into Sony full force now - and liquidating my most of my Canon gear.
This is one of THE lenses that put Canon on the map ! No compromises were made in producing this lens ( including weight and IS) A good review of this lens can be seen here -
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/300mm-f28.htmThis lens has been well taken care of. There are no issues with this lens - but, there are 2 things worth mentioning .
If you look from the front with the sun at your back, you can see what appear to be scratch marks around the very extreme periphery of the Fluorite element. IMO, this is of no practical consequence - though I have only used it on crop frame bodies.
It front focuses on my 50 and 60D's ( +13)
I have put an extra locking screw on the hood because I did not like Canon's version.
Comes with a Canon 600mm hard case, an elastic hoodie for the hood and a Canon 2X II TC which makes for a great 600mm f5.6. I have used this lens for almost 4 years now without issue.
I am firm at $2000 on the price - plus shipping (or pick-up) PayPal.
Whats the hose clamp on the mount?

It holds the D rings that I use to attach to a tether strap when I feel like tethering. It comes off . I do not trust the 1/4 -20 screw in the tripod collar.

I also have a low mileage 50D body that I would sell for $300 - makes a good back up body !
Also have a Tokina ATX 24-200mm 3.5-5.6 for Canon $125
