You didn't mention your brand. I have often used
www.keh.com to purchase used photographic equipment with very good results. They currently have a 400 mm f/2.8 USM in EX condition for $3400, or in f/4.0 DO IS USM in LN- condition for $3800, or an f/5.6 USM in LN- condition for $1120. The former two are GEL lenses; the last one has a 77 mm filter size.
There are similar lenses in manufacturer and non-manufacturer brands for most popular cameras.
I'd get something that overlaps what you have. With a 300mm max right now, there's probably no reason to go longer, unless it's for some type of specialty, probably not. Where I'd go is something like an 18-105 or even 18-140. With the 18-105 you get the overlap between 70 and 105mm. in that range you don't have a nee to change the lens. the 18-105, or what ever is similar in your brand camera, would probably be the lens used mostly and it's a bit smaller and lighter to carry.

You need to provide cost, purpose (subject material), and what support you have or are planning to purchase. You need to include $800 or more for a decent tripod and head for longer lenses.
Gene....I purchased a Manfrotto 055xprob with a pistol grip head for $495. It's more than sturdy for a 300mm. It's stout. Plus, 300mm's are shot handheld at sporting events. I have a friend who shoots a Canon 100-400L on Antelope Island both hand held and car door supported and she gets great shots....with, ofc, great light.
For the really long lenses I'd use a gimbal head.

I have a 70/300 mm lens and want to know what the next size zoom would be after the 70/300mm and where to purchase this lens at a reasonable price. Recommendations on other affordable lens would be appreciated as well.
The Tamron 150-600mm is the next step up for you.
The Sigma is back order for quite sometime to come.
$1069.00 on eBay, Amazon, Adorama, B&H all day long.
