Nice work, as usual.
Thanks John. I've tried a few different styles while portraying these beautiful plants and this one seems to work well.

Absolutely lovely Bob, both the picture and the plant. Did they tell you how old this particular evergreen bonsai was? Great sketch my friend!

Thanks Jim. While I was at the bonsai exhibition I focused on capturing as many of the plants as I could and did not stop to gather information about each display. When I do this again next year, I'll take a bit more time and learn the stories of the trees.
Great Bob. Love the pencil work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great treatment of a classic form!

Thanks Jim. I think I'm finally getting the touch on the angle, opacity, and spacing of the "sketch hatching". I notice I tend to stay on the side of "understated", but I much prefer that side anyway.

Thanks Michael. I used artistic license here and placed the tree against my favorite-colored background (a cross between malachite and teal).

I like it Bob... the background texture and the shadows give it just a nice hint of the orient!

You are going to make me put out effort to find a bonsai collection and go look at them.
I used to live near a garden supply/nusery/fish store run by a Japanese family, 3rd or 4th generation owners/operators. They had a fairly large collection of bonsai, taught classes etc.
When ever I went there I would spend most of my time just looking. Then buy my fish supplies or what ever and leave with my head full of "If". If only I didn't already have so many other hobbies, etc etc.
They had one over 5' tall, a little redwood trained to look like one of the "giants" in the national park.
