I sent Nikon Technical Support (support@nikontech.com) this question: I have a Nikkor-UD Auto 1:3.5 f=20mm lens, No. 441577. Does Nikon make a lens hood that will fit this old lens? If so, what is the model number of the hood, and can it be reversed to be carried on the lens?

They sent me this answer: Thank you for contacting Nikon. Regarding your inquiry because the Nikkor-UD Auto 1:3.5 f=20mm lens is one of the older lenses we do not have any information regarding this product. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.

Seriously? Nikon doesn't know anything about their own product?

Anybody Hogs here know the answer(s) to my questions?

It might take the HN-9 Metal screw in hood. As this lens is over 20 years old you might be better off finding a rubber lens hood for it. I think this lens was first introduced in November of 1967. If this is the same lens then you probably won't find the metal lens hood.

As jethro said... HN-9 metal screw in.

This lens originally came with an unmarked metal screw-in hood, and the HN-9 is also correct. If you cannot find one used, here is an alternative:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/843337-REG/sensei_lhsc_72_72mm_screw_on_tulip_lens.html

It cannot be reversed mounted, though.

Edit: A check of available rubber hoods shows nothing for lenses wider than 24mm, FX format. If your camera is DX, the wide-angle rubber hoods will fit.

You'll definitely need a screw in lens hood. It's 72mm, but one that is made specifically for the 20mm lens because of the wide angle of view just any lens shade won't work. The one made specifically for that lens won't vignette the corners of the image, where any off the shelf shade probably will.

If you really want an intelligent reply, purely e mail Grays of westminster UK; they will give you an answer, and it will be correct.

Correct me, if I am wrong. I think the point is that Nikon cannot answer a rather simple question about one of their own products.

It is kind of sad.

In fairness to Nikon, it isn't that surprising that a tech support person wouldn't have information on a 50-year old product, without some amount of research, any more than a parts house would have info on a 1967 Chevrolet radio knob.

I'm certain it could be determined, but at what cost?

Just saying.

The "parts house" doesn't make the part or the Chevy; Nikon (presumably) did design it and did make it. The rep just didn't want to put in the time and effort into your query because it wouldn't result in a significant sale for Nikon.

The knowledge of the above respondents is dizzying!
And informative; I had not thought about what drives hood design for a 20mm lens.

As for Nikon support, I'd have thought their process-oriented business culture would have driven support to get an answer. On the other hand, last year I reported a specification error on their web site; Nikon confirmed the error, thanked me, and fixed their web site world-wide, from Japan.

If it's one of the older lenses as Nikon suggested, it probably does not have a bayonet-type fitting for the lens hood, but a thread. So the chances are high that you can not reverse a hood on this lens, but you certainly can use one of the threaded hoods!

I always look on mir.com for info on old Nikon gear. The article on the lens shows a picture of a lens hood.

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/6070nikkor/ultrawides/20mmud.htm

Not much of a hood, eh?

Wait, wait, wait.....something made in 1967 is not 50 years old . At most, it is 48 and can even be as young as 47.5 :)

I just felt the need to stand up for all things made in 1967 :) :)
