I don't even want to think how many I took before getting the one I liked
Welcome to the addiction known as hummingbirds. If you spent a lot of time getting to this shot you will not believe the time you will spend getting a better shot. The ruby-throated hummer in your photograph has a wing beat speed of appx. 60-65/min. You may need to speed your shutter upwards of /2500-/3000 range. Some people use flash to isolate the wing but that fails to produce the inverted or reversed wing that hummers use. Only high speed shutters will allow you to capture the wing in a frozen state. Now that you have experienced success keep going and get some more great shots. Move in closer to the feeder and they will get more friendly, or maybe aggressive? They are fiercely territorial and will buzz an intruder. Show that you mean no harm and they will tolerate you. They are very relaxing and offer great photo-ops. Try to arrange for them to be in direct sunlight as that sets off the throat coloring. GL and have fun.
Humming birds are on my Bucket list Right after I photograph the sea Turtles hatching from their nest. I have only been trying to catch those Sea turtles for 10 years!!

Getting to watch sea turtles could be a major operation. You can attract hummers to your kitchen window in no time and for very little cost. Both will be fun to shoot. GL
...snip... has a wing beat speed of appx. 60-65/min. ...snip...
Just a minor correction: at this speed the poor bird will fall out of the sky... should be 60-65/second.
I'll be setting up my camera shortly (as soon as the sun has turned enough that it won't be shining directly into my lens) and aim it as a flowering bee balm plant. Yesterday was the first time I saw a hummingbird there. Hope it will be back today.
Any tricks to attracting these little Guys? They make for some great photos
This was taken at our place in NH. All I do is put the stuff in the bottle. Once they find it every couple of days I move it closer to the kitchen window.

Nice Picture! when I saw this, I had to look to see who posted it. I thought It was my husband's picture. He took some last night and it looks just like his. Same feeder and blurred back ground.
