Not quite what you expected I guess. This caught my eye at work. This is a subsea cable that will be installed in a oil field. It will provide power and a communication path for Seismic Sensors.

This is the core cable. A jacket will have to be extruded and steel armor applied before it is finished.

The second photo shows the machinery making the cable.

Taken with my ELF camera. The one that lives in my pocket.

That's really cool. Especially the first shot.
Thanks,

Only that each wire has a unique color so it can be identified at the ends.

I did not pick the colors but it is very striking when walking through the plant and you wander upon it.

I discovered this a week ago but by the time I retrieved my DSLR and made it back they had extruded the black plastic cover over it. Today I had my ELPH so that is what I used. By tomorrow all will be covered up.

As layers are added the diameter of the stack changes. The twist of the cable is constant but as the diameter of the stack change the alignment of each loop changes. The lower layer almost exactly lines up. The next layer it the twists do not line up creating a different pattern.

I wish I had the time to capture each layer as it is made.
